On the side, I'm looking to upgrade from my ENO doublenest. Was wondering what would be a quality hammock to get next? I was thinking about a warbonnet, or i can get a good quality hammock and attach my own bug net with velcro tape

Idk if you are into MYOG but ripstopbytheroll offers MYOG hammock kits with diy bugnets too. Very cheap as well. I've never tried them personally but people say they are nice.

ripstopbytheroll looks really awesome! I'm going to have to look into the material some more. I remember reading on the henessey hammock website that they make thier hammocks thick enough to protect from the mosquios. I'm curious as to what materials i should look at or maybe if theres a wiki on hammock materials somewhere?

Also, still interested in /out/ approved brands. I remember hearing of one a while back that made custom orders everytime, I'm just drawing blanks with the name :(

I have an ENO doublenest, got it to try out hammock camping. It's peak comfy and I'll never opt to sleep on the ground if hammock is an option. I've been eyeballing the DutchWare chameleon for when I upgrade.

I have a german shepherd so I don't think he'll fit in the hammock with me
Was considering buying an ultralight tent he'd be able to carry himself that I'd set up next to my hammock

Not a fan of hammocks, I've used them on several occasions and have now switched back to a tent.

Cons:
>Colder/less protection from elements and (underquilts are expensive)
>If not setup correctly/limited tree selections in your area = uncomfortable sleep
>Harder to get in and out in general
>Getting out of wet cloths and boots while trying to stay clean/dry before you enter
>Cannot have gear/food/firearms/etc as easily available as if it where inside tent.
>Feel completely vulnerable

A good insulated sleeping pad is cheaper than an under quilt and there are tents out there that weight the same or less than a hammock. My current tent sets up faster, is lighter and smaller, and allows me to be far more comfortable.

I have a Trail Lair hammock from Simply Light Designs - some guy in Idaho that makes everything fairly custom with sub 24hr turnaround times. Great quality, but certainly not cheap.

The feeling of vulnerability is all psychological

Tent systems do tend to pack smaller and lighter, but if you think sleeping in a tent is more comfortable then you never actually gave hammock camping an honest shot

Deer hammock experts. What stops me from buying just a hammock and tarp, and then using my regular sleeping bag in the hammock, instead of spending money on the quilt shit? Reason is i wanna try hammock without spending money in case i hate it compared to tents. I would use it during summer.

You can use a pad in the hammock
You need something under you just like when camping, because the wind will suck all the heat from your ass otherwise

So just regular pad and bag works for summer? Maybe even no pad, as long as there is no wind? My old inflatable stuff failed last year due to shitty valves, and i don't feel like buying new this year as i need other things.

If it's above 75° or so then you wouldn't need a pad
Anything colder than that and you'll probably be cold without one
The problem with pads in hammocks is that you can easily fall off the pad while you sleep, which is why underquilts are usually preferred
Foam pads are real cheap and will do the trick in a pinch

I just use my normal sleeping bag when I camp. If its going to be below 40 I'll bring a pad I made out of reflectix. I've used that down to the teens with my 32* sleeping bag and was more than comfortable.

I got my fabric in from ripstopbytheroll and I love it. I'll be ordering some bug netting soon too, I can't decide the best way to mount it though, I don't really like zippers but I can see velcro letting bus in and being difficult to seal

Anyone know if there's a bug hammock on the market that doubles as a bivy with the reinforced bottom?
Something that can support your weight but if you're caught somewhere without trees you can just plop on the ground? Most hammocks I know of are light on the bottom.
