or anything where you're out in the wilderness doing work? I'm 29 and looking for a complete career change. I don't care about money, I just want to do a physical job outside. I feel like a fucking bitch sitting in front of a computer not doing jack shit

I've done some intense physical labor, and I agree it can be shitty, but when I'm not physically occupied I have crushing existential anxiety and angst. At least if I am tired, I can enjoy the small pleasures in life.

I have a good friend who did two summers logging in Alaska. He slept in a tent with a Henry 45-70 to protect himself from bears and who ever else came by. Most guys had some sort of trailer or RV. The work was hard is an understatement. Most guys had DUI’s or petty warrants in the lower 48 and were your typical alcoholic druggy degenerates. camp was not a place you wanted to wonder into. The money is decent because you can’t spend it while working but your doing 10 hours of manual labor a day. After two summers he decided to cash in his chips and find a normal job and wife.

Timber falling is dangerous as fuck, steep learning curve, mediocre pay for putting your ass on the line. You'll wear out a truck per year and a saw or two. Hours are good if you don't need much sleep. Turn you into a genuine hardass if you can hack it. Most can't.

I worked at a remote mine in Alaska for a few years in my 20s. The mine site was beautiful and the work was physical but not back breaking; although I was an engineer not a true laborer.

The best part about these type of jobs is the schedule. I worked 2 weeks on 2 weeks off. That means that you have half of every month to travel and explore. I spent two years building a cabin on my property on my time off.

I work in agriculture and I've enjoyed it thoroughly. Depending on where you are, the season can be relatively short with good pay. The hours are long, but most work nowadays are done using equipment. I'd look now in rural ads for guys looking for farm hands. You'd probably be scooped up pretty quick for the harvest season.

Very physical labor, high injury rate, often away from home for long periods of time, high chance of hearing,back,joint damage over time. long work hours, also a lot of the work is with heavy machinery which increase death/injury rate.

Nice to be outside all day, until it rains for a week, you are still going to go out and work, unless its hurricane winds or some shit.

Arborist work is just as dangerous as logging maybe a bit more so due to hanging from ropes running saws. I’ve done both. Oilfield work is also kind of an out gig due to remote locations and living in camps. Thing is if you are going to last at any of these jobs you better put down your purse and put out. Thick skin also helps as political correctness does not apply to these fields. If you can hack the long days and the hard work it can actually be quite rewarding

If you weren't, there was a problem with your resume. If you were, the next thing you'd want to do is track down the numbers for the duty stations you applied for and call them up to shill yourself and learn more about that particular job.

If you have no relevant experience whatsoever, it may be easier to start with a conservation corps or a contract crew.

I've found other ways to make a buck when I need it and money comes easily enough that neither I nor my family of four are hurting. If you just want a taste to see if you like it, look into seasonal conservation work. Some pay shit and are full of retarded hippies and essentially vagrants, others pay much better (though still low relative to 'real' jobs). I've done a season doing fisheries work in the mountains, for $3000/month (on the higher end for this type of work, to give you some idea) essentially unsupervised and left to my own devices to conduct the work as I saw fit. Was fun, but also a pain in the ass at times. Often times these jobs may go unfilled and don't have any real requirements (as far as degrees and such), though relevant experience always helps.

But you may not enjoy it as much as you like. I was primarily on foot, backpacking into remote areas for 8-10 days at a time, and it could be incredibly frustrating and tiring at times, despite spending the majority of my time simply walking through beautiful, more or less pristine, mountain wilderness.

Recently I've started working in mining although I'm still cutting wood on the side. There aren't many woods left where I live and a lot of competition made it hard to make a living like this

Gives you a sense of accomplishment. On the con side, sometimes, you'll physically exhaust yourself, you'll ache, you'll get injured in some way, you'll get dehydrated etc. But it's nothing lots of water, sunscreen and 10 hours of sleep can't fix.

Never done it, but you sit in equipment all day either dropping trees, processing trees into logs, loading logs into trucks, or hauling logs in trucks from my understanding. My cousin used to do it, made some decent money, quit after a close call almost killed him.

Never done it, no idea what it entails, not much demand for fishermen where I am from. I imagine you stand in one spot for 12+ hours a day playing with ropes, but I'm probably wrong.

Sucks dick. Old guys sit on tractors because they are too busted up to do anything else, young guys get busted up doing grunt work until they are old enough to get put on equipment. Most work is seasonal, pay is shit especially for the work you put in. Damned near everything is automated outside of livestock and cows are assholes. Aint no western movie ranches anymore, your looking at feed lots and confinement houses. Not an ounce of wilderness in this job at all, so I don't even know why it's on the list.

If you actually want a job where you are in nature look for jobs with the various government agencies, parks/blm/f&w/ect... or become a guide. You still won't be some mountain man working in the woods, but at least you have some time outdoors.

Farm work was good. If I wasn't in dental school I'd move my ass to North Dakota and do that. It's hard work but you feel good at the end of the day. Not sure what doing it your whole life would do to your body. Realistically you'll be operating and maintaining heavy equipment, the Mexicans do all the /out/ work for pennies on the dollar.
Logging was wild. I worked for a tree service clearing powerlines, so a little bit different than selling trees. They sent a packet detailing all the work injuries for the pay period. Literally a packet. There were deaths every year. I really enjoyed it even though I had some close calls.

100% this. Came too damned close to getting permanently fucked up at work today from a two second lapse of focus. Almost no one gets killed on the job, but a hell of a lot of people turn in to invalids. I also aint scared of death, but living as a cripple for the next 40+ years scares the hell out of me. Medical science has come too far to let you die but not far enough to make your right again, stay safe and stay healthy.
