>>156519Call of the Wild
Far North survival from a dog's POV, following Buck from his privileged life indoors to the hardships of being a sled dog during the Gold Rush, to eventually returning to nature.
Swallows and Amazons (series)
Classic early 20th century English childrens adventure literature. I was inspired to learn how to sail by these books, they're still good. I plan on reading them to my children.
Heart of Darkness, Josef Conrad
It's a book about a guy who takes a boat up a river. Good read, they adapted it into a movie starring Martin Sheen.
Anything by Farley Mowat
Yes, there was a minor controversy when much of his work had to be reclassified as fiction, but who didn't see that coming? Lost in the Barrens was my favorite; it's the story of two teenage boys who are accidentally lost in northern Manitoba and survive for the winter, before journeying back to civilization. Absolutely fantastic.
Into Thin Air
The Everest disaster of 1996 as described by Jon Krakaur. Essential reading for anyone who goes to the mountains.
Touching the Void
How Simon Yates became 'The Guy Who Cut the Rope,' and why a 'Yates Descender' is just a knife. The real misadventures of two mountaineers who didn't bring a snow picket, and couldn't build a haul system. Another example of a perfectly avoidable epic. I can't believe the made a movie out of this.
The Dolphins Tooth
Guiding ain't easy, even in Beautiful British Columbia as this guy finds out. Read about how a young engineering student from Ontario broke out of the office and became an adventure guide in Alaska and Western Canada. More people have signed up for the COLT program because of this book than any ad campaign could have accomplished.
