>too crowded for my tastesYou are right. I specifically chose Au Sable East for our campsite (I and two friends) because it seemed like the most remote location, given that it was in the middle of the Pictured Rocks Lake Shore and it was a 1.2 mile hike to the designated campsite. The thing about Picture Rocks is that you are only allowed to have fires at the provided community fire pits, but as it turns out, all the campsite locations are in a circle around the community fire pit, and all locations are within 50 feet of the pit. There is no privacy whatsoever.
So imagine, my friends and I drove 8 hours to get lost in the wilderness, packed all our shit in our bagpacks, walked through mosquito and fly infested woods, hoping to find ourselves totally isolated from the modern world, only to find that we now are forced to make small talk with some faggot boomer from Milwaukee, dirty stinking hippies, and a bunch of faggot children. The good thing about arriving 1 hour before sunset is that there is virtually no chance of a park ranger busting you for camping at an undesignated location.
