The /out/ obsession with this guy is annoying. Chris did more to live an /out/ life than anyone here will ever do, and died because it's really fucking hard to survive solo in Alaska. He deserves some respect for at least having principles and living those principles. I love nature too
But a big part of the reason I like to go is that, after a couple of weeks out, everything back in civilization is pure gravy
Flush toilets, level surface for cooking, clean clothes, etc. are all much more appreciated by me, if I have done without them for awhile.
Even sitting in a contoured car seat after first getting off the trail is an illustration of the comfy way we live.
Backpacking makes me appreciate it, every day.
