Beyond that you can combat them by treating your sleep stuff with permethrin. There is also a good body of evidence to support the idea that it takes a while for tick born diseases take a number of hours to transfer. So if you do a thorough check in the morning you can catch any dug in ticks before anything nasty is passed to you.
I tarped the whole AT, the east coast of the us is ground zero for Lyme's, and never had tick trouble.
