Is there an /out/ wiki? Or some sort of online resource that has information on all things /out/?

Specifically, I want to research some beginner guides for hiking. What equipment to have, what sort of routes to go on, etc. As well as this, I'm interested in learning about a variety of /out/ activities such as wilderness survival, bushcraft, fishing, and much more.

the most important thing is to stop reading and start going outside.

This weekend, pick a state park near you with a decently busy 4-6 mile trail, throw a couple granola bars and a bottle of water into a bookbag, and get out for an afternoon. You won't need to how to navigate with a compass, or build a fire, or need any fancy equipment, since it'll be a well-marked trail. If you actually get lost, use your phone GPS, but try to navigate without it.

Then the next ttime extend the trip to something 6-8 miles long go for the whole day, and bring a sandwhich and have a picnic.

Once you get more comfortable being outside and getting around, you can slowly start adding things one at a time
>buy a compass and navigating an unmarked/less busy trail
>get a headlamp and night hike for an hour or two after sunset
>get a waterfilter and learn to use it so you don't need to carry a gallon of water each time
>bring a cookset to cook a lunch on the trail.

No wiki, or book, or youtube videos can give you this experience. Each time make a note at the end of the trip of what went well, and what you think could have gone better, and you can come back on /out/ and ask questions about how to troubleshoot.

This is a good post. Half the fun is learning more about your capabilities/needs and adjusting.

They forgot one important thing tho. Before you ever set foot outside, make sure to find and buy the perfect survival knife. Price is no concern. If you get the wrong one, it's game over man.

this is the shortest wiki you can get.
what clothes and shoes are you wearing right now? can you walk to the nearest grocery store in them in this weather? if yes, then you are ready to take your first hike. (yeah, even if you are wearing crocs but i dont recommend it) use google maps, find the closest easy trail, preferably with phone reception if you are as green as i think. walk 1 mile in and then back. think about what could have made it better and work from there. both getting better gear and doing longer hikes. its not magic, nothing is required, except the will to just do it and start getting real experience. you cant just read a wiki, buy lots of stuff and expect to go for a one weeker in the wild.
