Is white water rafting fun or is it a meme like Zipline.

Plan to go to hudson River Gorge Rafting and it's 6 hours.

White water rafting is fun but its not just rapids like that the whole time. Sometimes you get long sections of flat water. I go mostly in Maine when I'm camping or rent a cabin but I've gone in Wyoming and Costa Rica as well.

I've done it a few times and it can be fucking wild. Now is a pretty tame time to do it, the water is running really low and it won't be very exciting, but it'll be fun to float down the water with the occasional class I or II. If you want to have fun there with some real rapids, go during April, the river gets up to 10 feet (5 times higher than it is rn) and shit gets wild. You'll need cold watee gear for it though

In good conditions, it's a blast. Exciting and scenic. At worst it's a dangerous nightmare with your life on the line. And if the rapids are very tame, it's a bore. In-between boring and terrifying is a lot of fun. Ziplines are shit btw, unless they are massive and fast.

Are class III+/IV- ok for a first timer if your guide is experienced on that river?

As long as you're not very out of shape. The rapid class is how difficult it is to swim out of. A class 4 won't require to much athleticism, but you should be in decent shape and a good swimmer. That's my thinking, but it's probably safe anyway. I'd err on the side of danger.

III-IV is doable if you're able bodied and your guide is experienced. That's what most tourist whitewater trips are rated at (class I-II is scenic floats). The big things are to always listen to your guide and if you fall out of the boat don't try and swim the rapid. Flip over on your back, point your feet downstream and use your arms to steer yourself to slower water and/or the bank so that it's easier to recover you. Most trips will run with a safety boat following behind in case they need to pick someone up.

I think the Hudson is kinda boring (especially this time of year with no rain), but I'm probably biased a bit towards bigger rapids

That is probably the perfect sweet spot if you are scared. Most injuries actually happen on very beginner trips where people don't take it seriously and companies give any college kid a guide stick and send them down the river
If you're hitting class IV then the guide probably knows what they are doing

In any case though, your fate is mostly up to you, the only thing that will mess up an experienced guide is a crew of tards that don't understand how to paddle or listen

The Hudson is a meme at its current level, if you live in New York you're probably a solid 10 hour drive in any direction to a solid rafting river
