Started building a kayak, this will be the base. I'll update with Photos as I work on it this week.

If anyone else has /out/ projects they're working on please share. Bonus points for anyone who's built kayaks/canoes and has tips.

For now I'm gonna use about 50 layers of cling wrap. But I'm hoping to hunt moose this fall or winter, if I bag one I'll tan the hide and replace it with that.

Nice, was thinking about doing a canoe similarly. I don't have proper wood for it, but a lot of fucking mulberry that needs removing and that shit is tough. Plus I've basically pollarded it with a half assed attempt at cutting it down a while back, so lots of thin long straight branches.
Interested to see how your project works out.

Mines bamboo, Farmers here use it to block wind erosion and now it grows everywhere. It's so light and easy to work with. It also only takes a year for most types to grow big enough to work with. If you have some land you can look at growing some. You can do so much with it, next I'm looking at building a shed. It's also pretty cheap if you can find someone local. Look around at some local farms, you can offer a farmer $20 and ask if you can cut as much as you need.

No specific plans, just read every guide about building a stitch and glue boat and watch every video I could find. From there it's making design descisions based on what you can aggregate from all your sources. Sometimes you just figure out what you need to do along the way too

Well this is just about it. I'll coat the outside with Flex Seal then take it for a test run and post a video. It turned out pretty crooked, I'll definitely build the next one out of PVC so I can practice alignment. It should still float, I won't be taking it on any rivers though, but a near by lake should be fine, I'm a trained lifeguard so im not worried about it sinking, I'll just stay close to shore. Well I'll probably make the test video sometime tomorrow, and I'll start a new thread if this one's down when I start the PVC kayak.

Probably would have been less crooked if you’d lined up your cross braces to make “boxes”, much stiffer arrangement than what you’ve done.
Also maybe try split cane and add a lot more ribs to it, and side runners.

Over all though good job, you actually did something which is more than most can say lol.

otherwise you'll be spending more money on plastic wrap than you would on a mass produced kayak

Okay so, not dissing on your project at all, but how on earth are you going to keep the bottom from ripping open??

I was always taught that when getting into and out of a lake, you partially set your kayak into the water, and sort of "scoot" yourself forward into the deeper water from the shallows. During this process you are almost surely rubbing against the lakes bottom at some points.

Would doing that not rip away the bottom???

It may so I'm gonna be really careful. Also I just put 3 coats of flex seal on the outside and bottom so I'm hoping that'll protect it a bit. I'll probably launch from a dock the first time though just in case. And if it floats and stears ok, I'll buy some boat paint, which will protect it a lot better. But I'm not shelling out another $50 until I know it's worth it. This was also mainly a cheap test kayak so I can learn to make a better one.

I would suggest copying a hobie cat design and build a trampoline in the middle for you to sit on
making your own sail is ambitious

yes, if you want proper geometry so you can sail into the wind, you need to get the area and shape just right and have well made battens

I put it on the heavy side with the thicker bamboo and more support rails, but I'll have a bag with me if that's not enough. Good advice though I was thinking of that, but if have to collect more bamboo, and that's a lot of bamboo to hual and I have to walk 4 miles to collect the good stuff.

That's what I plan to do eventually, I just wanted some practice projects first so I don't spend a month cutting, curing, and splitting all that bamboo just for it not to float.

I have no practice at all, and did this after watching 2 YouTube videos, and it worked just fine. If he's too lazy to try himself, then criticizing me for my first attempt is retarded and his opinion is invalid.
