On that topic, you can greatly improve the taste of water, and remove some chemicals, by putting a simple piece of coal in your bottle that you keep permanently, the best one for that being japanese binchotan coal. It can be pretty expensive, it's kind of a novelty item now, sticks are sold separately in fancy plastic boxes, and a single stick can cost as much as $10. But you can still find some that you only have to pay $5 for a 2.5kg bag.
If you want to clean it, just boil it for a few minutes, but then make sure to throw the water afterwards, as it will contain everything the piece of coal previously held.
