>>1559787Saw a red tailed hawk swoop down right ahead of us on the trail and grab something. It flew above to a tree limb to eat it. Feathers and tufts of down would fall away. We watched for a while until eventually it dropped the remains. It was a dove it had grabbed. It dropped only the wings. It ate the whole body, legs, and head. The wings were the only thing left and they were still attached to each other. Sorta spooky looking.
Another time I came up on a field in the middle of the day and a baby skunk was there rooting through the shin-height grass looking for bugs. It was the size of a softball. I got within a few feet and it seemed to never even notice that I was there. It just kept searching for bugs. No sign of siblings or mom.
Bobcats are the most rare thing I have seen. They are always so alert and slinking around. Very eerie to see them padding carefully around without making a sound. Much smaller than I had always imagined as a kid. And beautiful.
