Going to Oregon for a week in August

Going to Crater Lake one day, and the rest is freed up.

Where are the best camping spots? Any lesser-known areas?

The whole crater lake area is great (when it's not on fire), but a hotspot for missing 411 shit.
Mt Hood and the surrounding forests are more my thing

kek. in all seriousness, anyone from out of state should be aware that it’s in their best interest to stay the fuck away from Portland (and Salem) if they can help it. some of the suburbs there are alright but the main city is in a Fallout-tier state of decay

The entire Cascade Lakes region southwest of Bend kicks ass. Excellent day hikes ranging from 1 mile to 40 miles depending on what you want. PCT goes through it as well. Backpacking is great too on most of the lakes

I could tell you my camping spots but then I'd have to kill you. Seriously tho, I like to camp in the Cascades/3 Sisters wilderness area and the Willamette National Forest. Avoid the campgrounds that are right on the highway, they'll be jam packed that time of year. Check google maps and head up one of the thousands of logging roads. There are plenty of back country campgrounds with water and pit toilets that won't be full of retards. If you like to fish hit up the McKenzie or the Middle/Upper forks of the Willamette River.

I would suggest stopping at paulina peak/ newberry caldera, its on the way to crater lake near La Pine, there is a very nice overlook where you can see multiple mountain ranges, old lava flow paths, and lakes.

Its a long road, and you'll need a car that doesnt suck.

You mean Downtown? Yea, downtown is pretty dead. Pearl District and Slabtown has pockets of stuff, but most of the places to go drink/eat are across the bridge on the east side.

Never been to LA, but in terms of SF, you have to remember SF is 7 miles by 7 miles, so every city ill is magnified because everyone is scrunched up closer together. There's plenty of regular crime, but because everything is spread out so much in Portland, you really don't see too much unless you live in the Section 8 areas. There's definitely tweekers and homeless here, but you generally don't come across them to the same frequency as you would in SF.

Also, a conceal carry permit is not unobtainium here, even in Multnomah County. So even if things get a bit hairy, you are at least armed vs. buttfucked in SF. Not to mention the moment you leave general Portland area, you will come across a lot more conservative population.

About 10 miles from you currently. going to be moving to Vancouver, WA with my gf in a couple weeks. Milwaukie is really nice, I had a good time down there before.

I'm planning on going to Gifford-Pinchot national forest soon. Really my first /out/ experience.

How recently did it get that way? I remember walking the streets at night safely 5 maybe 6 years ago near downtown and as far east as SE 37th.

The antifa thing is blown way out of proportion. Almost every antifa chimp out have been isolated in downtown Portland. And downtown Portland is NOT a daily destination unless you want to shop or stay at a hotel. In fact, I bet you after your 2nd to 3rd visit into downtown, you’ll barely want to go back there because there’s nothing to do.
As for crime, it’s like all major metro areas, there’s always crime, but unlike San Francisco, everything is spread out so you’re not going to be experiencing 2-3 incidents within a few blocks unless you actively go to shitty areas.

With that said, do realize there’s more and more californians here and there’s an air of contempt for californians.

Go to Ramona falls
Its summer now so the hike should be pretty easy
I went unprepared in late winter and almost died haha
All my friends went back before we made it to the falls, but I eventually got there and its definitely a sight to see

Bend is a lot more slower paced, a lot of breweries and nature stuff to do. But there’s an influx of out of staters to Bend.
Milwaukie is cool. A bit more conservative overall and quite a bit of manufacturing jobs there. Funnily enough, if you’re renting, Portland proper cheaper than Milwaukie. Namely because a lot of those places in Portland (NW Slabtown especially) has shit all for parking.

What I did take
A small snack I made myself
The falls are actually pretty close to where I live and are a really nice scenic spot.
The trail climbs about 25 feet over a wide area and can be intimidating if you are new to hiking. We went all the way down to one point where everyone was pretty scared
I made my own sandwich
The trail can be slippery and slippery muddy. I took my trusty old snow shoes since I thought they would be okay but there's still pretty much nothing going up there
One of the girls I've never seen before
I took pics of everything from my phone, trail, tree, rock, rocks, the mountain, sandbag, rocks , the rocks, etc. (I don't think I've ever seen any of this in person)

Mt Hood area is spectacular. Douglas Trail in the Salmon Huckleberry wilderness is packed with spring water, wild edibles, cool shade from the summer sun. Definitely give it a look. Pic related is from my camp down there.
