I just fill my canteen from anywhere(including swamps), might check map for farms upstream if i feel like it.

Its currently really hot here in finland and mfw my workmate complained how much water he has to take with him on a boat fishing trip.

Depends how risk averse you are. It’s probably never safe for pregnant women, children, or the elderly. The cleanest water will be from a spring, as the water moves downhill animals start pissing, shitting, and dying in it. There was some asshole laying in a waterhole that everyone pulls water out of last weekend and you could see an oil slick of bug spray coming off of him. Not only were people going to have to fill up with his ass water, they get a big spray bonus also

if the source is a melting glacier or other clear running spring where it is also really fucking cold. Truth is the dysentery or other water-borne disease threat is overemphasized. If you actually source your water correctly it is fine.

I've never had any trouble as long as I have known where the source of the water is. I only really use flowing water without filtering. Hold the bottle in the middle of the water, not near the surface or at the bottom. This will prevent anything floating or moving at the bottom from getting in.

First make sure it doesn't come from a direction where any sort of human built structures are located. In general: the further away the better.

Next try to go up the river as far as possible as it's minimizing the chance of something sitting in it.

As you can tell never drink from lakes or something, always flowing water like rivers.

Lastly: If there are living beeings like crabs etc. in the water it's probably safe as they have high water quality requirements.

Following these general steps you can minimize the risk of getting any disease but still I'd recommend filtering or at least boiling it over fire.

This. Always check for amphibians (salamanders/newts especially) and clams before drinking water from a stream cause they quickly perish in unclean water.
