Anything that makes a loud scary bang if you shot in the air. Failing that, bear spray. If you don't like bear spray you better be a really good shot because unless you get it right between the eyes a charging bear is essentially bulletproof.

I think 10 rounds at a charging bear would definitely mortally wound it though, your best bet would be it bleeds out before it kills you. Also depends on the type of bullets being used.

I'd think a short barrel 20 with hollow point slugs, would be the best defensive gun. 20's are really light, and nothing's getting back up after a slug, it's basically carrying a .50 call long pistol.

I hunt with a Moss930. I put deer slugs though it.

The first time i shot it at a deer, it was starting to get dark. For like a solid 30 seconds to a minuete after i shot, i was blinded from the flash, and deaf from the noise. Nearly dropped the gun and myself out of the treestand from how hard it kicked (mind you, this was a semi-auto, i can only imagine the kick on a pump action).

That deer ran about 100 feet then fell the fuck over and died. That deer tasted great.

10/10, would go deaf and blind again.

If you're 1v1-ing animals, a mountain lion might still have an advantage over you because its hard to hit agile targets, but everything else shouldn't be too much of an issue. Bear, Moose, Bison, Wolves, Squatch. Did i miss any important ones? Maybe Jaguar as you get closer to South America.

A lot of fatal bear attack ambush distances are less than 20 feet, wherein the bear reaches you in less than 3 seconds. With tons of instances of literal sub-5 foot ambushes on trails. This is the worst case scenario you should prepare for. So by all means practice sub 3 second magdumbs with a holstered pistol.

My slow ass is only capable of a few accurate shots in this time frame, guess im just not up to the standard required to live in bear country.

Bear spray is significantly more useful than a gun in bear defense. More bear attack situations are resolved with sprays rather than guns.

That said, a high caliber revolver (.357 is the low end) works IN ADDITION to bear spray if you’re hiking. You’ve got to be an idiot to hike with a 12ga, but it would be better than a revolver if it came down to it. I know of a friend who was charged and shot the bear multiple times with a 30-06 and it didn’t veer off until it was about 5 feet from him. Spray is honestly the best with a gun in the other hand.

DEFINITELY not a glock 10mm. Semiautos are not for bears: the short action demands small (lighter) bullets and lighter powder charges. If I had to have a pistol... I would be confident with a Ruger revolver in 454 Casull.

If I were shopping today I'd get a shockwave. It's a meme that came out in the past year or two, but actually lighter. I have an 18.5" 12ga with pistol grip and it *almost* fits inside a closed 40L backpack. The shockwave definitely would.

I almost told the fuckit earlier complaining about the range of slugs earlier to go with a 30-06 if that was his issue. But his real issue is retardation so I didn't waste my breath. I bought a Glock 40 for a fishing trip trip to Alaska. Ugly as sin, but it answered my needs for a high cap, hard hitting round.
Bought some Trijicon night sights and a combo of Buffalo bore hard cast and Underwood extreme penetrator mixed in the magazine. Set up with a IWB holster to keep a low profile around unsuspecting tourists.
No Brown bears, but did see a black bear, he wasn't an issue though. Slept well the whole trip.

Depends on the type of bear. If it's black bears, a 10mm would be a great choice. For brown bears (Kodiak, grizzly, etc.) a .44 magnum or stronger.
