>>1567113It's a matter of great debate in this thread it would seem. I can speak from personal experience only.
Military boots are made for long distance, high strain walking/marching and are meant for heavy and rough terrain, but are generally fit for any purpose. This is to help with combat fatigue, where by the soldier having marched great distances carrying essential equipment with minimal rest becomes more likely to suffer from accidents, strains, or compound fractures.
They will definitely support your ankles and allow for movement over rough terrain, but are bulky in situations where your on a trail or asphalt.
In such situations a pair of trail runners or hiking shoes will better suit your situation, as you won't be covering uncut terrain and you will be able to have breaks, rest stops, and meals when you want to, as well as control the size of your pack weight.
I always find it remarkable that no one ever talks about sandals, I know it's extra weight but when I'm walking in summer/spring and it starts raining I immediately switch into my good sandals and stow the boots.
Walking in pissing rain, water will get into your boots, regardless of gaiters.
