Hey guys, first time posting on /out/

I'm going camping but I don't want to spend a lot on a tent (they are cramped anyways) so I want to make a tarp tent. Anybody know any designs that are spacious? I'm not sure if I'll be near any trees but I can buy some posts.

just get a 10' by 10' (or so) tarp, some paracord and stakes to go with your poles, it's pretty versatile and what i'm gonna do

I myself prefer designs that give great protection from rain and wind, but that most importantly, can stand up to wind. A very small tarp is enough to provide enough space for you and your backpack. If space is a concern, just get a bigger tarp.

Bought a 3.5m X 5.3m tarp and a bunch of 6mm rope. I'm ready for our beachparty this weekend.
Some of these tent designs are pretty great

Just use a smaller tarp as a ground cloth and sleep on that. If it might rain then worry about putting up a tarp over your head.

IMHO its either cowboy camping (open bivy) or tent camping, tart camping is only in an emergency or just prepper bullshit

If you don't expect wind, you can make a decent tarp, no matter how inexperienced you are. Just improvise.

To handle strong winds, I use the design in pic related.

Depends on the kind of tarp. There are ripstop nylon tarps too. There are all kinds of tarps, just like there are all kinds of tents.

You can do the same with a tarp. You can even find some poncho tarps that you can use as a poncho and pack cover, but also as a tarp for your tent.

A tent is nothing but a more convenient tarp, though less versatile. They really aren't that different.

In this pic I slept in the tarp shelter during a gale. I made it very low and wide, to avoid the rain from getting to my sleeping bag.

Not true at all, unless you carry two tarps

inner tent body with a thicker rainfly, helps keep moisture away from where you sleep compared to a single layer design.

Also, improving a tarp bivy with high winds in exposed areas is a fucking nightmare. I'm not talking thunderstorms in the east, I'm taliking camping at 13k feet in the sierras with only flat granite and small boulders around and no trees or wood to improvise rigidity.
