Sup /out/, video games and anime isn't fun for me anymore and I'm pissed I wasted so much time on them, but that doesn't matter now, I want to actually do shit, I want to learn how to camp, how to shoot, how to garden, how to live off myself just to be better or in case the boogaloo happens soon. I'm 20, I have almost no experience aside from """camping""" in an RV with my family and watching Bear Grylls when I was 10, I live in Texas. Where do I start?

I'd start with whoever took you out on those RV trips if they're still kicking, I'm assuming it's dad, and I'm also assuming you stopped at state parks which have hiking and biking trails. Unless you were an absolute fucking slouch you must have participated in these activities with the rest of the family. So hit your pops/moms up and see if they want to camp for real sometime soon, advice from someone you trust is way better than a bunch of anonymous jack offs who shitpost more than they actually camp. When it comes to shooting there's always /k/ and when it comes to gardening there should be a general up in the catalog.

one thing ill say is, DONT drop all your money on a cool knife or cool expensive gear as soon as you start falling in love with the outdoors. because you will. stay away from spending too much money and get into the wilderness on your terms because you WANT to, and not so you can spend money on an "epic tacticool" knife to use. most importantly, do some hiking like everyone here says. no matter what you do outdoors, unless you plan on chugging monsters and listening to ledzed in your RV, you will be doing a lot of walking. so hike a good amount to test the waters. thats all you need to know for now, this post will be long gone by the time you're ready to spend money on camping gear. when you do, come here again and not REI.

Unironically, this. Best way to start with /out/ shit, is to just jump in. Go to any state or federal park, they'll have some kind of ranger station or at least an information board with maps. You can start learning at either of those.

The best thing to arm yourself with is experience and knowledge

You likely already have backpack and some good shoes, like others have said just go on some nice day hikes. Google maps can even help you find local trails.

Buy a fishing license, a second hand rod and a bit of tackle see if that appeals to you. It should be cheap and easy to get into.

As for hunting/shooting, unironically take a hunters ed class and a firearms safety class. Check the catalog/archive here there's been tons of threads in the past on getting into that stuff.

Gardening, there's a general on here that's good. Also, no joke, go to thrift store and I guarantee you find a fuck ton of books on the subject for pennies.

I did recently read that Texas is something like 90% privately owned land, that might make things tougher but not impossible. Does your family have land? Do you have any friends or family into this stuff? That would probably be a major benefit to you. If not look into Rod & Gun/hook & bullet clubs or sportsman's associations.

If you want to sleep in shelters and shit, learn how to bivvy. It's really not hard.
Fires are ready, just use a basic lighter and keep it under control. If you want a big campfire use a fire barrel.
If you really want to learn how to live four yourself buy a trangia. It's a small portable stove and cooking with it is super easy.
Also if you want to you should pick up fishing. It's expensive enough, but it pays off

You like vidya and want to learn guns, while also going innawoods? Do you like S.T.A.L.K.E.R.? You can do some of the innawoods challenges in pic related, they took me from basement operator to someone who actually goes out innawoods patrolling with their gear and shit, and it's a fucking blast when you make a theme and larp like you're in some eastern european radioactive shithole rather than your boring ass local forest. Military surplus gear makes great basic cheap hiking and camping equipment that'll last you a good long time.

If you don't already have a gun, I reccomend you get one and learn how to use it. If you have any friends who could teach you ask them, or check out guides online, or maybe take a class (shouldnt be hard if youre in texas). As far as choices see if you can try stuff out and find out what you like and whats in your budget. I'd recommend an SKS ($300 from Classic Firearms rn), an AR-15 (PSA kits available sub $300 rn), or some sort of lever action (I recommend a .357 magnum, so you can shoot cheap .38spc for plinking and .357 Mag is good enough for small game, deer, or people). All are cheap to shoot and you wouldnt be doing yourself a disservice if it was your only gun.

You know what I did in the Army after all the equipment was issued and inprocessing was done? Went for a 3 mile march. Literally just with a 2Qt of water, not even wearing assault packs yet. Work your way up, toughen your feet. Break in your boots. Conditioning your feet and building leg/pelvis/back muscles is 100x more important than what equipment you have or learning to shoot or survival skills. Practice those later, get outside first.

Do you live in a city or rural? In either case you don't even need to go to a state park. Probably there is some sort of nature within walking distance from your house. If rural it is right in your back yard. If city, you might need to walk 10 minutes to a river valley park or urban forest of some sort.

I think that's the best way to ease into it. Diving right in and driving an hour to a fancy park is good to, but for a newbie even a minor mobilization or commitment of precious little time can be discouraging off the start.

Look at the plants, mushrooms, birds and rocks, learn a little about them. If you can find any easy mode wild edibles that's a great way to connect with nature and start to cultivate a sense of self sufficiency.

Once you get the ball rolling with something close to home it'll be easier to find the motivations and comfort for more ambitious outings.

And here's a little literature for you: "how to read nature" by Tristan gooley. They got it on audible in case you are a poor reader like me. Lots of stuff in here thats kind of common sense stuff for veterans, but could be a great intro for a newb.

Yeah, I had one that was borderline traumatic, my dad took us on a camper-trailer trip to Yellowstone when I was about 13 and my uptight, autistic mother started fights over every stupid little thing because she was clearly jealous of how my dad and I were actually enjoying the adventure and the experience of being outside, rather than spending literally 100% of our energy worrying about our itinerary and getting all the stereotypical pictures she wanted. At Old Faithful she started screaming at me over some tiny disagreement and never backed down until it was a big crying scene that ruined the whole trip, and permanently damaged my relationship with her.

Takeaway: don't go on trips with people you know are going to be awful.

Its a good thing that you want to start out. As most people wrote id suggest you just start walking somewhere in a state park(they are somewhat regulated in terms of wildlife and plantlife) considering the fact that you have no survival skills. Im sure you can find a good few guids on youtube about camping, and buschraft videos and guides are very easy to come by. Just remember that some of that shit takes a lot of strenght, time and patience so dont get frustrated over not being able to build a log house in your first /out/ trip.
