Black bears should I worry?

We only have black bears where I am located in the USA. I know they are skiddish but are used to rummaging through human food and stuff. How serious is it to hang or store my food somewhere secure? Also I assume in winter this is not a problem due to hibernation?

If you are camping in a low traffic area, use an odour proof bag, loksak, and don't eat or cook where you are sleeping there is a little worry about.
If you camp in more high traffic areas then it's more risky. I tend to hang my food in high traffic areas more for the mini-bears, mice, rats, chipmunks, etc.
Bear hangs are a bit of a con as black bears are really good at climbing and the trees where you are might not give you a suitable branch to hang from.
If you're nervous have a look at getting an ursak.

Backcountry bears you will almost never see. They are afraid of people
Camp or trash bears are used to getting people food and can be very determined about it
If you are going somewhere where there are camp bears, your local agencies (NPS,FS,PD, etc.) will be trying to warn you about them
In camp bear areas, I recommend a bearcan for newbs, or an ursack for vets

not all bears hibernate. It depends on climate, food availability, and length of the season. And it's not necessarily predictable. You'd expect places with longer winters to have bears that hibernate but that's not generally true because they can't always survive the longer hibernation.

It also varies within populations of bear, e.g. one bear might hibernate while another in the same area doesn't.

point is you can't count on bears being gone in winter. Generally the further north you go the more likely they are to be hibernating in winter, but there's no guarantees.

OP here. Thanks for the replies. Planning a fishing trip to the Adirondacks soon. I just bought a Bare Boxer Contender. This seemed like the lightest bear canister for solo trips. I also got reflective yellow tape for it. I love prepping before heading /out/. I was thinking of keeping the canister in a small dry bag and just hanging it off a low branch or under a log but some sites said not to cause then it gives something for the bear to grab and take it. I guess I'll just wedge it between rocks or trees.

yeah no need to hang your bear can. But do look into getting an opsak/loksak to put your food in. Reducing odour will reduce the chances of a bear wanting to play with your can.

I live in south eastern ky, and we're surrounded by bears. A 700 pound black bear was hit by a suv on us 23 a few miles from my area over in Wise, VA.

For the most part bears are little shits and humans scare them to death unless they're with cubs. The only downside is bears that has gotten use to humans feeding them beside the road or in their backyards. Those bears won't really run away until you make loud sounds .

I only hang my food if I'm away from camp or if I'm in a high human area like red river gorge since humans may be feeding them.

Just make sounds while you're innawoods, pack bear spray or a gun, and a fire should keep them away.

Picture is a average size 400 or so pounder we have here.

Bear spray is much more effective as it fires in a cone, thus reducing the accuracy needed to hit the bear

I just know too many horror stories about bear spray not being effective. My niece used to work in pretty popular national park and they were all issued bear spray, but almost everyone secretly had a revolver or small 10mm glock on them.

My view is if I'm home in the woods, I'll have my gun on me. I've had a permit for over 10 years and now live in a constitutional carry state.
But if I'm in Montana at a state park, I'll still have my gun, but I'll use bear spray first.
