GB is as good as it gets according to steel experts. I have a Hults Bruks boys axe and love it. I have no complaints about it. I paid over $100 for it though new. I also found a guy on LetGo who was selling off a lot of his axe collection who sold me some antique american steel hatchets ($10 each). They are seriously just as good as these newer hatchets. Get on ebay and look at some. You can find some good deals. Norlund are good, but can be pricey.

If you can sharpen, which you should learn anyway if you haven't already, you can probably turn most hardware store axes into acceptably workable too, just look for one with a decent handle (straight and tight grain assuming it's wood handled). Alternatively buy an old head and rehang it if you live somewhere you can easily find good wood or good preshaped handles. GB doesn't offer much over decent axes. Yeah a $10 harbor freight brand axe won't compare but for your average Joe an estwing is fine and for an advanced user council tool and other brands offer mroe than enough for way less. GB is a memed brand.

I own pic related and have camped with it and many other small axes. everyone in this thread saying the steel is batter and the craftsmanship is superior is completely right, but what you'll actually notice functionally using a high quality axe compared to a $10 modern axe is that the chips fly further and easier and the axe chops deeper. with the chopping ability it's not a matter of sharpness, a good axe digs deep, even when dull, and a sharp but poorly made axe hardly bites.

I own a few GB axes. I really love them. They hold a edge great and with minimal work, you can have it shaving sharp. Only downside is the sweeds doesn't really have hard wood in their country. So you'll know it if you're working with oak or hickory.

I also own vintage stuff from plum, kelly, true temper, ect, and they're all really nice axes. It's nice being able to toss a large head on a smaller handle or create some strange combos.

Condor makes some decent axes too. I have their Greenland axe and a friend has their cloud burst. The sheaths are the best I've seen, but it's not as sharp nor does it hold the edge like a gb.

For a small 'take it in your backpack' hatchet Fiskars X7 has served me exceptionally well over a few years. Easily sharpened, light, chops like a mfer. Don't see a need for 'hatchet Apple' branding just to feel speshiul and outdoorsy. A hardware store 5 buck hatchet would be probably just as fine after sharpening, blowing all the namebrands out of the water function-value wise.

I have a Tramontina which has a shit heat treat and a pretty uncomfortable handle so I'd go with an Imacasa, okapi or an Ontario, they all look like they have more comfortable handles but probably have equally shit heat treats. Also uncoated blades that size will be annoying if you care about rust.
The Tramontina did come usably sharp though, which other foreign made machetes apparently don't

tl;dr that machete gae get a cheap, non-overbuilt one with a plastic handle

Plastic handles on a lot of them tend to be mroe uncomfortable but unlike wood you can't sand it down to make it comfortable, also haven't had an issue with rust on mine as I keep it oiled. Haven't noticed heat treat problems either, the steel is soft on purpose so the blades don't chip if you hit a rock.

Anyone experiment with lighter (2-2.5#) heads on longer handles? I'm talkin 36 inches long. I really love smaller boys axes but I'm 6 foot 5 and it's downright dangerous to try bucking logs with a 28" handle, standing upright that shit reaches barely below my knees.

Anyone able to help identify this? It a good brand? Bought it on sale for 30 quid but I don't know axes too well, just looked good when I came across it.
Sharpened it up and brought it with me on a weekend hike, was fun but honestly I found myself reaching for the knife & folding hand saw I've been using for a while now, so it seems more a novelty given the weight & space it took up. On the other hand it is pretty cool so I might just bring it with me anyways - there any uses I'm maybe missing out on? Hatchets suck. You can't do shit with a hatchet except strip twigs off a branch. Get an axe. I do split wood with a hatchet by driving it in whit a 3lb hand sledge hammer but that is stupid and dangerous. An axe is the right tool for the job.

What is the confusion? The grain is more or less front to back. Other marks are saw marks/tool marks. Also, it is common now for manufacturers to epoxy the hell out of the eye of hammers and axes for some reason. I'm guessing to prevent shrinkage of the wood over time by sealing it extra well.

Anyone have the Coldsteel shovel? I recently brought out my hatchet and my laplander for an overnight trip and found that I really didn't use the hatchet all that much and I would think that the shovel's sharpened edges could be fine for delimbing while also being useful for diging fire and shit pits.

Your woodcutting level will be 1 anyway, by the time you break the cheapo you'll be on top by not fucking up a good axe or you'll never break the cheapo and won't have a reason to buy a better one.

Never really understood why anyone uses them for /out/ stuff; a normal hatchet with a blunt backside works just fine for hammering in the odd tent peg.

A framing axe actually works great for framing, but it's not like anyone uses them anymore that I've seen cuz it's all nailgun, all the time.

Best way to get an edge back on an antique I have.. the "edge" its self is more like a 1/2 centimeter of blunt metal... I guess I need to machine it down. A whetstone will take months. I have no idea how it got so bad... or if its this way by design for blunt force cutting style. It's heavy.

Traditional designs are overrated.

Good for hacking away at stuff to small to warrant an axe or in to much of an awkward spot to use an axe or saw. Saws are better most of the time though but a lot of the time the hatchet is easier. This only matters if you have big enough property to have to worry about this type of thing.

I got one, re edged it (I fucked it up using it to remove carped glued to concrete on the fly) and then cut the convex part on the bottom to be concave. it's still a tad heavy, so next I'm going to hack and sand the hammer off the back of it. otherwise the steel is fine and it's a sturdy tool, but it's really for roofing and shop work, not outing.

I do! I bought the one with the sheath on Amazon for $30. I chopped some small trees down and a whacked a log. I also brought it to the beach. It works pretty well.

The metal is pretty thick and sharpened like a machete. The handle is attached with screws instead of rivets, so you can easily disassemble it if you want.

My only complaint is that the handle is finished with shellac or something similar. Gripping it if it's wet or your hands are sweaty (me) is annoying.

can i get some recommendations on grit of sharpening stones for ax/hatchet heads? i know the basics of keeping the existing angle, but if i was gonna take a sharpening stone camping or backpacking, what brand/grit would it be?

I keep a lansky 100/320 Puck stone Ina bag and a strop. You can use higher grit stones but I don't notice much of a difference. Lots of people like kme stones.
