THe biggest reason I think people don't wear them is either the "i can swim" or "its uncomfortable" camps. Finding one that fits well is very important if you're gonna wear one all day. Even if you can swim, accidents happen and that's where the life jacket shines. It keeps your unconscious ass from drowning and floats you easier than treading water so you save energy.
Another plus about a life jacket is added buoyancy to help you get back into your boat.

This is one I got after being dunked a few times on a river kayaking trip. Sure, I could swim but we were in the middle of literal nowhere so if anything were to happen, I'd have been SOL.
Also, it helps to bring a buddy. Probably would have lost my paddle if it weren't for him. Would have definitely been screwed then.

Been swimming like pic related for 43 years thus far, pools, creeks, rivers, lakes, oceans. I am truly sorry for the state of your fathers and raising, but at age 2 I was being taught using kickboards, and by 3 was being taken out into the middle of a large pool and run through overturned raft and swim to shore drills.

Dude, I sink like a rock, even with full lungs. That survival float thing they taught as kids hasn't worked since grade school.

On your back? You probably aren't relaxed enough, it has and will work forever if you do it properly, and if you fuck your knee up you can float to shore on your back (doing it properly) just fine, you point your head and gently sort of "snow angel" your way slowly back.

I almost drowned as a teenager because my family was on a windy lake in the boat and I jumped off the boat without my life vest planning on just staying near the boat. but the wind pushes the boat away way too fast for me to catch up. and I quickly got tired and accidentally swallowed some water from a wave before my dad finally realized what was going on and drove the boat over. it can happen VERY easily guys. now I would never jump off a boat in water that I can't stand in without a life vest.

It just Cabela's cheap store brand angler vest. Picked it up a year or two ago. I like the pockets and the mesh shoulders make it so I don't notice it while I'm paddling. The flotation pads on the back give me more cushion to lean back into, too. I don't wear it swimming like a weirdo, just kayaking.
