Is going /out/ in Florida during the summer even worth it?

Every summer I get a surge of wanting to go camp, but it's so hot I can't tell if it's worth it. Never been, but I just want to.

I've got a hammock with a bug net, and will need a tarp, is going out in the next month or so really a bad idea?

I used to go to big pine key all the time as a kid. There's a bunch of smaller mangrove islands around the main islands. I don't know how habitable they are though

Cool, might be good even for just a day adventure. Somebody told about Little Rabbit Key, apparently that's easier to reach from the Everglades side though.
Either way I'm cautiously excited (haven't confirmed the job just yet) but I'm just finishing a year in Alaska and it'd be cool to spend some time paddling it water that's above 36°F for a while.

Can you stay near the beach? I live near the beach on the Atlantic side and it’s not bad at all if you chill out in the shade in the afternoon. But most days I work right on the edge of the Everglades. That 15mi difference almost makes it feel like a whole other climate. Also every day at 2pm in the summer, big storms brew over the Everglades and shit on you but then the ocean temps and breeze hold them off about 5mi inland. In the early morning you get the storms coming off the ocean and then those often break up 10mi inland, so pick your poison. It’s nice on the coast in the afternoon where you get the ocean breeze but the storm clouds just to the west are giving you some shade.

Also to mention, if you stay near the coast, at least on the Atlantic side, it never gets above 90F. That sun is hot, but the ocean keeps it mid-80s, which is why it’s perfect if you find some shade in a breezy spot and chill for a few hours. Inland it gets mid-upper 90s with the humidity to match until those storm clouds roll through.

None of that 100+ bullshit though. When I was coming down from Chicago to look at houses, it was July and everybody at the hotel was like “Eww why would you come here in the summer?” as it’s 85F and it’s upper 90s in the Midwest.

AM humidity after the morning storms but before the ocean breeze kicks in around 10am, that is something else. You can get the same feeling after a summer T-storm other places, but it’s almost every morning from April thru Sep here.

I'm near orlando. Going to beaches is definitely possible. I'd probably look into Sebastian Inlet for this kinda thing. It doesn't really have long trails though. Also I don't believe there's any trees, so the hammock may be an issue. I could definitely sleep in the back of my car lol

There are normally trees just by the edge of the beach (depending where you go). It won’t be like on the water, but probably where the sand is ending there’s often sea grape and some palm trees and other shit.

I think Coco is only about an hour east of Orlando. Shouldn’t be too hard to find a quiet spot somewhere up there. Comb the Google Maps real good, the beach I like is one small parking lot in between two condo buildings and it’s never super crowded (compared to other beaches in Dade-Broward) because of the lack of parking and it’s sort of hidden.

Shitcagoan here moving to Miami in a month. Can you please give me some advice on going /out/ in south Florida? I've already seen some good places other anons mentioned in this thread. I'm used to just going on day trips or urbex stuff since that's all that was within driving distance from me, but I'd like to get a lot more into actual camping and other /out/ activities.

I mean you pretty much gotta get into water stuff. Fishing is top notch. If you get bored of catching big bass, go to the other side and go for snook or pompano.

I want to get a kayak or two. Despite being a crowded metro area, you only have to drive a couple miles west and you’re in an empty swamp. And if you get on a kayak you can explore tons of backwater canals or take it down to the keys and find some little islands.

Thanks for the response, KvD. I like fishing a lot and I'll look into getting a kayak. Do you know anything about aviation or sailing? Also would you recommend any good campsites? How's hunting there? I've heard Big Cypress has turkeys, deer, and hog hunting.

I went out last night.

Was too anxious to sleep, lots of noises going on in the forest. Next time I'll definitely bring weed/whiskey and headphones/earplugs.

Skeeters were able to get through the bottom of the hammock and fucked the space on my back just above my buttcrack pretty good. Lesson learned to bring a blanket to lay on (it was actually pretty cold too)

Got the job in Key Largo for the winter. I'll have access to some little sit-on kayaks through work, but I'll have to save up for something bigger for fishing/touring. Kind of pumped, I've never been to Florida and I've spent the last year in Alaska so it'll be neat to paddle somewhere my limbs won't seize up if I fall out of my boat.

Working at a private resort in their recreation department. Basically I'm the gear handler/maintenance guy for the beach area and boat rentals. Pay's kinda shit, but I'll have access to the rental equipment, the staff has their own gym/pool/bar and I'll be in the Keys all winter. I'm looking at it as a working vacation, hoping to spend my free time fishing and paddling (and maybe banging some housekeepers).

Aviation tho... there are tons of private planes around here. Every pilot’s dream is to take off from FLL end end up in a wormhole in the Bermuda Triangle. Don’t know anybody who sails, but those are always tight little uppity groups, was the same thing on Lake Michigan around Chicago.

I know this already. Some months ago an anon on here talked about how he got a laser sailboat for cheap and uses it to explore small islands around the coast of South Florida and boat camp or camp on the island. I'd love to get into aviation but it's expensive.

Unfortunately this seems like the case unless I go to a pier or something. Canal fishing is fun, but I wouldn't want to eat the fish there.

If you get a kayak, you can expand like mad on the fishin. I said suburban because I fish from shore and there isn’t a ton you can do from shore in the Everglades or ocean. The piers are full of minorities, especially at good times, plus soaking bait is boring. I have a couple holes on the Intercoastal that are usually empty but it’s hit or miss and I don’t like planning my week around the moon phases.

Kayak would let you go a million spots on the Intercoastal or the backwater canals. And there are access spots to the Everglades that are a short drive from the urban areas, but you need a boat or ‘yak to get out in the water.

I think kayak Jack's was hiring a while ago. I see them at Robinson preserve and lido all the time.

To the OP, springs this time of year is where it's at. Rainbow, ginnie, juniper, Alexander, and salt springs are all great. Camping at salt springs isn't bad but it's hot out right now.

Wife and I kayak a tandem pelican. Nothing fancy. Have a couple cheap singles too. Maybe a hobie in the future but except for lido we go to places so shallow the drive wouldn't work.

Yeah, I've been thinking of wekiva. Not 100% sure if they allow dispersed camping, but they do allow primitive and campsites with plumbing (so I can convince my girlfriend to come lol)

Depend on where you're taking it, what you're doing with it, and who is coming with you. Solo fishing in shallow water fishing kayak is great. Canoe isn't the best platform for fishing but it's comfy to tool around with another person and your doggo. Skiff if you intend on going good distances between fishing spots. Kayak and canoe are for avoiding shitty boat ramps full of boomers. All have their pros and cons.

Kayaks are hella versatile. A nice fishing kayak like a Hobie would be awesome. I think people even snorkel and dive from kayaks.

Anything bigger and with a motor and the rules change completely. It’s like a bicycle compared to a car, one costs $$$ every month and the other is a one time purchase so you won’t be flushing money down the toilet if you don’t have time to get out on the water because your busy with work and family shit for a couple months.

It’s not the cost of buying the boat up front. It’s the cost of everything else. If you get a skiff, you need to register the boat, you need a trailer which also requires yearly registration, you need to insure both of them, insurance on the boat and trailer, a vehicle that can tow the trailer, then you’re going to have to find a place to launch it and pay whatever fees are associated with that (often there’s public boat launches but still costs a few bucks an hour to park the vehicle and trailer while you’re out). Oh and you also need to figure out where to store the boat and trailer when you’re at home, lots of cities and neighborhoods won’t let you keep a trailer and boat in your driveway so you might be paying monthly storage.

Compared to a kayak that you could toss in the bed of a pickup truck.

This is why I always said I will never buy another motorized watercraft unless I live on the water and the thing is docked in my backyard. But if you are going to use the thing a lot, the costs might be worth it to you.

Florida is a horrible state with horrible weather. If you hate yourself this may be a good option, but if you value your comfort and your physical well being I suggest not camping in Florida. That is just my personal experience though, I’ve never done it in the colder months but it’s still too hot for me.

I never understood this, its really less about the heat here and more about how the air sticks to you and doesnt allow your sweat to evaporate. Its not really more hot, just your body cant cool properly. Same with the winters as the air seems more fridged than it is because the humidity, I finally got to compare the cold here to snowy conditions in Tennessee and it felt relatively the same, but the air up north just didnt cut through my clothes like it does down here.

This is true. If you stay near the water, it never gets much above the high 80s. Inland is like mid 90s. But when you get that swampy 92F and no coastal wind, it sucks as soon as you start sweating because you won’t dry off until you get your shirt off and cease doing anything physical.

Those swampy trails are the ones I like the most though as they are almost always empty and can find some beautiful scenery. Just the mosquitoes are insane and bite through most clothing. Best time to go is almost always winter though as the wet season makes those trails almost impassable without a kayak or something

Honestly, I like launching off into the St John's and finding a beach head without any property on it or a mangrove island. Strongly suggest to have something to keep you elevated though because of the gators and changing tides could flood your spot.

Id pack a hammock and a mosquito net. Used to have one that was about 75 sq/ft and would drape it around using palms to tie the hammock under. Anything really to keep the mosquitoes away, they will tear you to shreds if you don't. Usually hang things on tree limbs as well just to keep the moisture from the ground off of it, let alone flooding. A good practice point for it would to be to go to Mosquito Lagoon. Its a camp ground very similar to beach heads you can find on the St John's. Few buddies and I went a while back to just get a feel of how it'd be on the St John's.
