Much better line capacity, line strength and weight for conventional/baitcaster. Conventional reel of equal weight can hold much more line for equal line diameter compared to spinning reel. You typically have to sacrifice one out of 3 for spinning reel. Line capacity isn’t as important for shallow water but matter a lot for deep water.
The drop is more straight and smooth due to lack if line twist. You don’t want the lure to spiral on the way down because a lot of lures depend on natural action on the drop.
Cranking power of conventional reel is better, and that matter when you are doing a lot of cranking heavy lures and fishes constantly all the way from the bottom
Being able to thumb and release line just feels good for vertical fishing. Make it more ergonomic to adjust depth and work the column of different depths.

I only ever fish spoons for toothy predators that demand a wire leader, so I always have a swivel on, but I have no idea if a bassfag or whatever should use a swivel if it isn't built into their wire leader.

What's your preferred process for finding what baits the fish are biting?

I regularly fish at reasonably wide and deep creek where bass and channels are known to reside. Every now and then I'll see them attack something on the surface way out in the middle of the water, and yet I still have yet to catch anything there. Obvious solution is just to find a more active spot, but that's a bit of a work in progress.

It's preferential really. Any big boy spinning reel holds enough line, until you're talking about 200ft+ or dumb fishing fish like big grouper or AJ, spinning reels are fine. They actually drop line off the spool faster too which is nice when you're jigging deep

Can I not see the fish?
Baits for covering ground, switch pattern or color after I've worked the area I can reach without result starting with a pattern or color that has produced in similar water conditions in the past

I only ever caught bass on spinnerbaits. It's gotten so bad that if I go to the lake on a beautiful day with clear water I know I won't catch anything. What can I do to improve?

Of all things, I actually have caught fish on braid and the thing that seems to work the best for me is simply to reduce the amount of time the fish are exposed to it. Provoking reactionary bites (particularly on topwater) has landed me plenty of bass.

Ultralight is fun fishing. I lost one larger bass and got a ton of smallies earlier in the day, all on 2lb test. The one I lost was at the shore line and I got a little impatient and snapped the line tryin to hold it up and land it.

You either use light-wire exposed hooks on stuff like wacky rigs or ned rigs or use trebles. Landing power isn't the main advantage to heavier rods, it's the ability to drive hooks.

Also I usually just tie a fisherman's knot or a Palomar knot (on the occasion I'm running straight braid)
What other knots should I learn? I know double uni for leaders too.

If you can get to everything you need and know where it all is, you're fine.
I separate by type of bait, so hard baits are in one box, soft plastics in another, etc.

Thanks, I'll try to take that into consideration. That's what I was thinking of doing, but a buddy of mine has some seperated by saltwater and freshwater or even types of fish. I was taking saltwater and freshwater into consideration, but I feel like organizing by bait type makes more sense and would be much less confusing, though it's an interesting idea. Making boxes based on type of bait seems super beneficial for storage purposes as well

It’s not only the cost and effort of importing jdm gears that is the problem. It’s hard to get them service and find parts for them in NA so it’s a deal breaker for getting jdm stuffs like reels for some people.
I would love to try out one of those ocea jigger if they get localized and make it easier to service those reels here

I think surgeon knot is the best line to line that can be tied quickly and easily if you don’t cast through the guides. Tbh, if I have retie leader on the kayak, I would go with a short one so I can just use surgeon knot

Muskie anon here. I brought my pike/muskie setup you guys helped me pick out on a pike tour of duty. I caught pic related who was a fat 40" fish. Not my PB pike, but I did get my PB walleye casting in five foot of water. I also got a 38" and probably a dozen pike in the 30-36" range, and more ax and hammer handles than I could count. Some good 15-19" smallies were mixed in the bunch too. I absolutely loved casting with my reel. These past few days were the best few days of my life. Life is so good.

I've broken the bill off of a couple bashing them on rocks, but I've never broken one otherwise (I've had Shad Dancer pattern Raps break in half between the hooks while reeling in fish, but never an Original). What is happening to yours that you feel they should be surviving?

I tie fg's they're way stronger because the mono/fluoro doesn't get bent at all and the braid is usually higher test than the leader. The tricky part is getting it to lock down well, but I've never had an fg fail. If I have a break it's always the terminal knot.

Today I had a girl in one of my fishing classes whip a fish back and forth to remove the hook bc she didn't want to touch a fish. We went over proper fish handling for a good 30 mins beforehand.

Yesterday, some boomer fuck took a broken fishing net that was lying around and left it in the water. When I went to get it out to trash it, stupid cunt said it was her grandson's. I knew she would leave it in the water and guess what was waiting for me in the water today.

Last time I agreed to join my two buddies to fish for walleyes it was the final straw. Poor people and minority’s everywhere. Soon as you catch a fish regardless if it’s in season, or 2 inches long some ugly ass fuck will either ask if they can have it or stand 5 feet away and start slinging casts. Some gook piece of shit was keeping every single smallmouth he would catch even after I warned them they weren’t in season. He kept doing so and promptly had his entire bucket of fish thrown out into the lake.

You can instantly tell they borderline mentally challenged by their rod and reel setups too. They always have some fuck huge 1980’s cat fishing rod with a 5000 size reel severely under spooled with 30 lb mono.

In my experience, brighter and transparent colors fare worse in darker water, whereas darker lures fare worse in clear water. Realistic patterns land somewhere between the two.

Keep in mind that fish can only really see the underside of a toad. 90% of topwater toads have a white bottom, and it will suffice for all but the murkiest of murky water. So I'd advise just picking a color you like or one that stands out well. It's fishing, this shit isn't a fine science.

I'm mostly curious because I'm not sure what to fish in that river. I can catch bluegill all day, and just about anything eats a worm so there's that. Talking equipment wise here. How reliable are button casters? Easy to repair/maintain? I have a new rod that takes a baitcaster and im assuming button/baitcasters are stuctured simulare.

Can't fish here this year. Too much toxic algae in the local water systems. Real bad subtype this year. It can kill you in 30 minutes and it is both a floater and a bed creeper. Not trusting a fish to avoid that when it's on my hook and I equally could drag it through it.

Might be wrong containment thread, actually this might be /an/ territory but you definitely want at least 4 tetras as they sometimes gang up on one in groups of three. For a 16 gallon I wouldn't even consider more than 3 because there wont be enough food. Plus cory cats get kind of big after a while. Haven't kept them in a few years but my brother is still very much into it. If you get a slightly oversized filter you can probably get away with a lot of tetras, but consider mixing it up and add some danios or the like.

I’ve had a pair of compass 360 bib wadders for 3 and a half years now and have not had a single issue with them. They are a lot more affordable than say orvis, Simms, Patagonia

Doesn't matter where. Same for me though, never heard of algae this bad except in stagnate barrels and toxic ponds fed by volcano vents. It happens though. Apparently its always there but in such low concentrations you hardly even find a bloom. Just got too much food this year.

Fish off the bottom in 18-30 feet, deeper if the lake is clearer, use worm harnesses, jigging raps, or small drop shotted flukes. Saugers tend to be the only ones active on the toughest of days in my experience. They will be most active at night but I've caught nice ones midday.

Here is most of my rods and reels. From left to right is my muskie rod, my heavy trolling rod (since replaced) my bass casting rod, my girlfriend's rod (since replaced with a shimano) and my UL/jigging rod that caught more fish than the above combined. My medium spinning rod isnt included. Nor is my ice rods.

Do I really need a kayak specifically made for fishing if I want to fish out on the water? I have a couple normal kayaks that I got before I was into fishing and currently I can neither afford, nor do I have space to buy another kayak. Is anything stopping me from just bungee cording a box to the back and rigging up a pvc rod holder? Would it be worth my time making outriggers from pool noodles? It will be fine though not quite comfortable for kayak fishing. I also wouldn’t take them in open water in ocean or really big lakes. Milkcrate is your best option and would be easy to rig the stuffs and rod holders on one.

Spincasters are fine for certain things. I have one on a telescopic rod rigged with a slip float for suspended jigging. With heavier weights they tend to cast extremely well but can twist line somewhat. If using lightweight baits/lures they can backlash if they take in a loop of line. I've never used one with braided line, but that may help resolve issues with twisty/curly line.

They are also pretty useful if you like to backpack to certain areas as the spool is covered and can prevent it from getting tangled up/snagged (and getting things like dirt on/in the spool).

I like them for creek fishing in wooded areas because there's no bail to catch on sticks and shit

they don't cast quite as far as a spinning reel, but they're better than baitcasters, which suck and you shouldn't waste your money on.

if you're gonna be trolling or dock fishing for big saltwater stuff get a conventional reel by all means, but baitcasters are a meme that needs to die.

I get a bucket and disassemble the reel in the bucket so that if I drop anything it doesn't get lost. Once it's apart, I carefully clean old grease, lint, sand, etc off of the reel parts. I put Lucas moly grease on gear teeth and any bushings, and JB80 spray oil on the bearings and sliding parts. Getting the reel reassembled correctly is the most difficult part, really.

back from a weekend of fishing, I consider myself a mediocre fisherman.

17 fish in total over 3 days, 3 largemouth bass, 3 white crappie, 1 black crappie, 2 rock bass, rest were bluegill/sunfish.
most successful lure was my dark blue spinnerbait, 2nd was a small crankbait that swam in a crazy fashion, 3rd was my rage tail 6 inch senko that almost got me a bass but it fell off the hook

going bullhead and carp fishing later this week, haven't done that in years so if anyone has any bait advice, be my guest

To add to this. You can just use dishwasher soap to de grease the gear. I use a toothbrush to get all the gear teeth and crevices in the reel. Though for grease I use the shimano grease or Cal grease but many other greases would work as well. Just grease any part that make moving contact and cause friction on the inside except bearings. Take special care to avoid getting grease in the anti reverse bearing . For saltwater, you can apply thin layer in the inside surface of the reel. Grease a any rubber seal as well. However, for shimano and daiwa newer reels, don’t put grease on the protect x for shimano (weird texture layer on some of their seals) and daiwa’s mag seal.
Then use oils for bearings (but not the anti reverse bearing)

1. don't use a spincast reel
2. don't put a spincast reel on a spinning rod
spincast reels don't teach you how to cast correctly since you cannot control the bail, they break easily, and they can't cast light lures for shit (they can't cast anything for shit)
Pic related is better stuff and can all be purchased on Bass Pro's website since that's where I took the screen cap from.
Lastly I would suggest that you use 4lb test trilene instead of 6lb because trout are super autistic

I can vouch for the Shakespeare Micro Series. That was my first rod I bought after my Ugly Stik. I wanted more sensitivity, and the ability to throw lighter baits. I started with 6lb mono, and felt that my casting distance was sub-par. After trying braid, and other lines, I settled into using Seaguar Invisx 4lb. The sensitivity of flouro vs mono is incredible, and well worth dealing with more line problems. I think the Micro Series is like 17 bucks? Well worth it.

I mean, its no St. Croix, but it was my go-to setup for my first "real" fishing season once I got addicted.

The Micro paired excellently with a Flueger President 2500.

I also forgot to mention- a lot of the issues that people experience with fluorocarbon on spinning reels is due to the way the reel was filled.

I tried Berkley Vanish, had a new guy at the store fill the reel. I went out fishing for a few hours and got birdnests, and it was a fucking nightmare. I took the reel back and had the same guy that filled my reel with Invisx restring it, and I've had no problems since.

This guy was fucking meticulous with the tension, and making sure that the line doesn't dig into the spool. He recently quit so now I'm fucked. lol

If you can't find an employee who cares enough to spool correctly, I'd say that Berkley Sensation is a good compromise between sensitivity and manageability.

I had 2 different people spool the vanish with two very different results. I'm not well versed on the quality of Invisx vs vanish, but I've had no problems with the vanish since.

Spooling it yourself and expecting no issues is unrealistic, unless you have a tensioner.

Bought some cheap spincast reels for my kayak since I just started kayak fishing and figured it'd make things easier. After a couple hours of missing fish I realized that the line doesn't always stay tight while reeling.There's certain spots while reeling that if something tugs on the end they pull about 3 inches of slack line before it gets tight. It's hard to describe without seeing it. However, none of my spinning reels do this. Hopefully I can return them. Do all spincast reels do this? What do other anons use for their kayak set ups?

I've never been able to run any kind of FC as a main line.

I even spooled fucking Sunline Sniper on 2 different reels for my Senkos / Ned Rig rod and had so many issues I junked it then threw fucking Trilene mono on it and it's worked perfectly.

Logically spincast really is a good middle ground, but unfortunately the market for it is pretty much entirely kids and boomers too set in their ways to change. There wouldn't be much interest in a high quality spin cast because everyone has already been forced to specialize in both spinning and baitcasting reels. Zebco is as good as you will probably get unfortunately.

I've tried fluoro, and it really isn't good. The invisibility is pretty cool but it doesnt help when it comes off the reel like a slinky. I've been running braid and a mono leader on most of my rods lately and I have no intentions on going back. My U-L however and my ice rods I run p-line flouroclear and below 6lbs it's a real nice compromise.

Spincast seems too have too much negative of both baitcaster AND spinning reel and its own downside as well. All you get is a worse baitcaster. If someone really make a high quality spincast, if the price ends up being too close to a good baitcaster then there’s very few reason to take that expensive spincast anyway.

I did Vanish once on a spinning reel. I see no reason to use flouro as a main line unless you really need to run lures deep, and even then they make this flouro-braid (maybe it was Spiderwire?) that sinks like flouro but is smooth and easy like braid.

The nice thing about spincast is you can fish with lighter lures. I can't toss a Panther Martin with my baitcasting reels because you need to have enough weight to really get the spool moving without backlash. Spincast the line just falls off the reel and you can use lighter line, plus its just push button and reel to lock. Casting respectively with spinning gear gets really old. I dont use a spincast, but I understand why the anon is looking for one.

Depends on what part of the South. There's plenty of Southern states with smallmouth and trout especially in Appalachia. Florida has peacock bass, snakeheads, and other exotics. Several states on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts have saltwater fish like redfish and speckled trout. There's often hybrid striped bass stocked in many lakes and rivers as well. You can also find crappie pretty much everywhere.

My reasons are that I've had more problems with braid. I hate extra knots, and I love the sensitivity of flouro. But that's why fishing is awesome. There's a ton of ways to accomplish the same goal.

I've been fishing for about a year and for some reason I've only had success catching fish with live bait (worms and nightcrawlers) on a hook. I've also had moderate success with a soft plastic bait on a hook that was scented.
I can never catch any fish on my assortment of Mepps spinners and Rapala minnow lures nomatter what I try.
I only fish in fresh water (ponds, lakes, and rivers).

Light braid is the main cause of backlash I've found. After spooling 65lb I've only had one backlash and it took 30 seconds to fix. My 30lb backlashes all the time. I'd rather throw a hallow frog or jerkbait on 65 than 30.

You can get by with a huge and slow ass spinning reel as long as you rip the damn thing. I've been using an ancient Ryobi spinning reel with fifty pound test as my frogging rig.
It's not ideal, but it's adequate.
Remember to wait a second after the hit. If the fish misses and you leave the frog, it'll probably come back for another strike.

20lb braid is nice most of the time, it will rip bass out of lots of cover and you can still actually cast with it. Real think lily stalks will fuck you with 20lb though, 30-40lb should tear through the big ones. You still need to go fast though, get hung up on one stalk for a minute and that bass will get you around 5 more.

It wasn't a bad day. The river was absolutely gorgeous and the weather was nice. I'm incredibly new so it was a lot of good experience for me. The sucker was an ok fish, didn't taste bad. A bit mushy but holy fuck did it have a lot of bones. I guess I'll wait till september to go for salmon again.
