This is far from efficient. Ideally, you'd just want to build an underground apartment complex with an airlock, rent to people with a high intellect, and if shit goes down, there's your repopulation population.

Asking people to spend the entirety of the rest of their lives inside a concrete box with no outside contact is cruel at best and at worst, repopulates the earth with antisocial spergs who agreed because they're already used to spending their lives in a basement.

I don't know how the fuck you expect anybody to construct a living society underneath the lithosphere. Such a settlement probably wouldn't even last your lifetime. You would have to supply/cool it through like 200km of tunnels, which I have no fucking idea why you would ever consider such a thing, and you could easily achieve a far more stable emergency shelter by digging a big bunker under some hill on your continent's craton. If you're trying to prepare for some massive meteor that just scrombles the surface of the planet, going into the aesthenosphere will do you absolutely no good in protecting you from that, not to mention you'd have to construct the bunker like a submarine and to widthstand the constant changing forces from the rock around you.

Also the thought of being put in some mole-people home and being paired with some fat autistic dude from /out/ terrifies me.
