What's the word on water bottles? Camelpaks seem to be popular, but are metal ones safer because less ingested plastic?

No one that goes /out/ uses camelback water bottles. Those are used exclusively by soccer moms.

I have 4 nalgene 32 oz opaqe bottles and 2 clean canteen 32 oz stainless steel bottles. But for the most part I just use smartwater bottles at this point.

Not them but I ran out of water once on a short hike and the dehydration was getting to me so I filled up from a creek and got it boiling in a small fire and cooled the bottle off in snow until it was drinkable. Must have gotten some pine needles or something in it while tending the fire because it had that kind of piney taste. But it was pretty good. My other theory is because the bottle got sooty on the outside it was the pine resin from what I was burning so the smell of that was interfering with the taste. The bottle is some nameless stainless steel brand I got for free from my bank on my birthday.

Did you not bring a filter? Or you didn't expect not to be out that long? Also side note pine needles are used to mask the flavor of nasty water. Prefiltering with a bandana helps. Seems like a hasstle that you would have to boil water every time you're thirsty

metal bottles are heavy and loud, you might as well use a glass bottle.
if you give a shit about keeping drinks cold you can get a hydroflask as compromise.
plastic is the way to go, I use a platypus as EDC and it works great.

I have used gatorades a lot because the wide mouth lets air escape, but mainly while driving or stealth camping.

If I really needed an in tent piss bottle for super cold long hiking situations, I would use a collapsable 32 oz bladder designated only for piss.

Yeah, I bought plastic bottles every few years plus I don't have the plastic taste anymore, so the Nalgene will pay for itself overtime. Just saying considering it's just some stainless pressed into bottle form I would bet they production price isn't even half what you pay. Same goes for the trademarked metal cups, I bought the chinese (Lixada) copy for not even half of what GSI or other companies ask for.

I use a ~17oz Swell stainless steel bottle and a 32oz BlenderBottle Radian, which is plastic. I was going to get a Nalgene bottle but then I got the above two as gifts, and that particular Blender bottle is built like a tank already so it's a good substitute.
