/Out/ists, how do I make my sleeping bag warmer? I have one that is rated for 2°C, and would like to use it during the winter, when it could possibly be down to -22°C. Of course, I'll be in a tent, and have good insulation from the ground. I'll also be using a sleeping bag liner, but that doesn't help much.
So how can I make my sleeping bag much warmer? I was thinking of sewing another liner made of fleece and put it inside my sleeping bag, Will that be enough? What do you suggest, anons?

At that point you're better off just buying a designated winter bag. Adding 24 degrees of warmth is nigh on impossible without basically putting it in another sleeping bag like the MSS you posted.

If you're making that big of a jump in rating you might as well get a new bag altogether instead of trying to transform a summer bag to a winter bag.

I mean yeah you can use liners, wear wool long johns while you sleep and all that stuff but you'll end up with a super heavy pack if you're just bundling up on layers.

Even with a tent, liner, fleece liner, and thermal underwear? Wouldn't fleece help? Given that I'd be carrying a lot of the clothes anyway.

The one I have now has the following rating:

comfort: +2 C
limit: -3 C
extreme -19 C

Ironically, you actually want as few layers as possible between the sleeping bag and you so that you can warm up the air in the insulation with your body heat. Adding layer upon layer does technically work, but it takes ages for your body to produce enough heat to permeate through all of them and is just a worse way to stay warm as well as being potentially dangerous if you ever become dangerously cold out in the field.
From one cold climate anon to another, it's way more worth your time to just bite the bullet and get another sleeping bag. I'd personally recommend Wiggy's.

If you really had an emergency and had to sleep that cold I guess it could work, but winter is still a while away so I definitely wouldn't plan on doing what you're suggesting. You have time to look around for sleeping bags on sale before winter comes. Even if you layer up a cold sleeping bag is one of the worst things you can do to yourself.

Get a dog. My dog and I share the sleeping bag, and our combined body heat ussually makes it too warm. I've camped in -20°c with her and had to open the bag.

You're only ever going to push a bag a couple of degrees past it's stated rating, and that rating is only worth something if the bag is made by katabatic or western mountaineering, both companies use a different system and are known to be very conservative.
If you are serious about sleeping down to -22C and think you can do it with a 2C bag then you are seriously unprepared. You need to read more and be willing to invest in proper gear.

Who makes the bag and what rating system are they using? Personally I don't trust the EN system as it was designed to make bags easier to compare. They test the bags in unrealistic lab conditions and rarely represent how they will actually perform in the field. Sleep temps are also quite personal so you need to know whether you are warm, cold, or middling. Some people require bags that are rated much below the temps they want to sleep in, where as others can get away with much lighter bags.
The truth is OP -22C is fucking cold, dangerously cold. And unless you are properly prepared with knowledge and equipment you could put yourself into a life threatening position.

This anon gets it. Tried it once when I was 15 in -30 weather in a quincy, froze my balls off, didn't sleep, ended up packing in in at 2am and slept in the cabin by the fireplace.

If you going to do this you need a better sleeping bag. That extreme temp limit on your bag is meant to show the limit where you dressed inside the bag will not freeze to death.
It has nothing to do with sleeping at that point, rather that your stuck there until someone finds you or the snow clears.
Your better off buying a better sleep system like a 5 season bag, and also working on your tent/shelter.
My quincy experiment failed because it wasn't a true quincy and I didn't have a way to heat or prevent excessive air flow from the outside.
If you have a winter tent look at getting a mini stove and hot tenting, it makes it nuch easier

Stay as dry as possible. Wear a dry base layer to bed. Most importantly, change your socks before you get in your sleeping bag. If you wear the same socks you walked around all day wearing, even if they feel dry, you'll lose insulation due to your socks evaporating in your bag. I have a dedicated pair of sleep socks when camping.

Always take ratings with a grain of salt, especially when the bag has been used alot.
I went camping with the scouts and used my 10 year old, -5C comfort bag, slept on a thermarest Z-lite sol in a large canvas tent with other people and froze my balls off, air temperature in the tent at night got down to 1C and on the ground it got -1C...
Just buy a nice new sleeping bag that has it's comfort rating to atleast what you think it might go down to, don't go /out/ with that one without any way of generating heat inside the tent.

it's also worth nothign that the rating on bags desn't mean comfort, generally. it's means what you can survive at. sleeping in a bag rated -22 when it's -22 outside won't be comfy.

Bag testing is reliable, it's done in laboratory settings with basically no variables to skew the results. What is not reliable is the claim made by the manufacturer, especially if we're talking about small brands or chink shit.

Right which is why it isn't reliable as a 'real world' rating. What it does is allow you to compare one bag with another, but doesn't give you a realistic understanding of how the bag will function under different conditions. The is especially true with down. There are many critics of the EN rating system and the way loft is measured. It's also well established that Katabatic and Western Moutaineering, who don't use the EN rating system have much more realistic ratings on their bags. These opinons are held by some of the most experienced and well regarded hikers and adventurers. This isn't some crackpot theroy made up by an anon. If Cam Honan and Andrew Skurka make a claim about anything to do with outdoor gear you can bet money that it's pretty spot on.
The EN system isn't _wrong_ it's just not the be-all-end-all of bag rating, and is a long, long way from perfect.

Why? The smaller firms have been the ones making the best gear for a long time. Their production standards are higher, their customer care is top notch, and they can easily make custom orders. PHD, Katabatic, WM, just because they are small doesn't mean they are bad. There's just a much smaller market for high end bags. The every joe isn't looking to spunk $400+ on a sleeping bag.
Also while the tips you repsonded to OP with are legit, they will never, ever, push a bag rated for 2C to -22C.

Really? I remember seeing the WN ratings on their site and being impressed by the alleged weight:temp ratio. But yes, while small brands like that may have an excellent and well earned reputation, they don't have the transparency of bags that have been tested independently. And there are lots of small brands or generic brands that don't fall into the category of high-end gucci outdoor gear. I'm thinking of the discount stuff you'll find on Amazon.

Look up thermarest blankets. They have some that go over the sleeping bag, but I think they are pricey. Might aswell Just get a warmer sleeping bag at that point.

Or you could put heated rocks into your bag, heard that helps.

Moisture from your body & breath will have the thin bag wet in no time, whatever you add. I've slept comfortably in -35 with a -32 rated cheap-ass Woods thinsulate bag that cost just over $100. A snorkle to breath so I could seal it right up would've been nice :) Spend a little money. Or dont listen to the people you asked for advice & go learn for yourself
