black bears are dangerous in the fall and the spring immediately before and after hibernation or overwintering.
Young black bears are dangerous immediately after leaving their mothers because they don't know how to get animal protein yet. Elderly black bears are often dangerous because they can no longer hunt anything faster than you.
Any black bear that's become used to humans and human food is automatically a danger because it sees you as a magic food dispenser and if you don't shit out some food it'll rip you open to find it.
So basically the only black bears that are safe are middle age males in the middle of summer that have never run into people before. And even those kill people often enough.
