>>1579558>Will the thunberg-boat sink? No, it's built to sail in the Southern Ocean. The North Atlantic is a walk in the park.
>What are the chances of her making it alive?Unfortunately 100%, they're sailing into a low and the child and her father (who probably had no idea what they were getting themselves into) are probably seasick and/or sick of the waves slamming on the hull.
The boat is an IMOCA 60, a class of racing boat that is sailed extensively in the Roaring Forties, Furious Fifties and Screaming Sixties of the Southern Ocean. They're built completely out of carbon fiber which is stiff as hell and propagates sound very well. Every time the hull slams into a wave it's like being inside a drum that someone is beating on. Every time someone adjusts a sail or a line creeps a bit there's a terrifying groaning sound that also propagates through and gets amplified by the carbon hull. In all but the calmest of conditions the boats are extremely wet, they routinely take waves over the deck and are designed to shed the water backwards as fast as possible which means being in the cockpit is equivalent to being in a washing machine.
The absolute worst part of this whole charade is that this is a 60' fiber-reinforced PLASTIC boat. In order to stay competitive they usually build a new one of these every two years or so, and during the two year lifetime they constantly get updated with the latest electronics and other systems. The "environmentally friendly" part of these boats is highly debatable in my opinion.
