Hello, /out/. I seem to have little to no motivation to go outside. I mean, I love being outside and I love seeing the world around me. However, I just get extremely bored rather quickly.

What can I start doing to have the outside more appealing to me? I don't want to just sit outside for a few hours doing nothing.

Pic related. I went for a hike a few weeks ago in the Nevada - Elko area. Really beautiful.

I live in Southeast Idaho, though. Not as much to do here as in Nevada. Pic related, me and my friend up in the hills of Idaho.

Generally speaking if you "rough it" a bit (camping out in an isolated area that provides no utilities or accoutrements) you keep busy the whole time.

Preparing and maintaining your camp, properly stringing up food and retrieval, collecting firewood and keeping the fire tended, digging pooholes and pooing in them, preparing your meals, etc.

By the time you're comfortable and stocked on wood etc and you have time to sit and "take it all in" it'll be fairly late and you'll be bushed. Stick a harmonica in your mouth or whittle something and then fall asleep I guess!

Bringing your friends helps.

Otherwise, get a bit more athletic. Set yourself goals, improve your fitness and so on. Climb higher mountains, do long distances faster, etc.

I have found that fly fishing gives me loads of reasons to head out into them thar hills.
Chances are there is at least one little stream or lake near you. And when I say 'little stream' I mean LITTLE stream. You'd be amazed at how little water fish need. Catchable fish. All it takes is on rock the size of a bowling ball to make an eddy, or one plate sized rock they can hide under.
Of course you'd want really light fly fishing gear, like a 2 weight rod.
Hike up to where no one would think to fish, flick your line 5 feet into that tiny pool, watch that little midge fly you tied yourself swirl around and around until this gorgeous little 6 inch brook trout thrashes out of the water, trying to swallow your fly! The fight wont last long, where is he going to go? But just seeing this gleaming little gem of a fish makes the hike out there worth it.
To me at least.
Its a hobby that will devour your life, if you let it. So far I have no complaints with that!

Granted, its a cutthroat and not a brook trout, but you get the idea.

One thing you can do is find a "sit spot." Go to an area frequently while trying to create as little disturbance as possible. Sit and let things return to baseline, then take in what happens around you. Notice how the birds react when a raptor flies overhead versus how they react when a ground predator comes into the area. Let the drama of nature play out in front of you and learn how to read the shifts in the animals' behavior. Maybe keep a journal of your experiences and observations.

Over time what you learn can help you read the woods better and be aware of how the animals react to both you and other things so that you create less of a "disturbance bubble" and can pick up on those disturbances caused by other animals or people. For example, I've often had times when I know other hikers are coming up on me even when I can't see them from a ways off because the birds raise alarms as the hikers trek down the trail.

You can also just surf around on Google Earth or maps and see if there are areas that pique your curiosity and go check them out. Following your curiosity often leads to interesting encounters.

Buy a dirt bike. Hook up with some local riders. Go explore on your own when you feel comfortable with it. A street-legal dirt bike is a whole new level of freedom.

I got really bored with hiking and shit. Maybe even burned out, having done it all summer long with a job on the trails crew one year.

Then I got into powersports. Opened up a whole new world to me - I can go farther, longer, and see more in day than I ever did before. With the right equipment, disappearing on the bike for a day or three isn't out of the question either.

I see far more animals on the bike/snowmobile than I ever did hiking, since you're farther away from civilization than the hiking trails get you in the same period of time.

Not to mention it's way fucking fun.
