I once got caught in one gigantic land slide in Vietnam: I could either take a head start, jump off the cliff and swim away or wait for the wave of cars to push me off the cliff and lead me to a certain death.
I also had a nepalese bridge break when I was right in the middle of it, a gardrail break while I was leaning on it, and I've also jumped from the top of countless waterfalls.
So yeah, it's useful advice.
