It's definitely a widow. Not trying to be a dick OP but I think from now on we should just an "/out/ identify general" thread for insects, plants, fungi, etc. We get a few threads like this asking to identify a specific plant or bug or something. Maybe an identification general would be a good idea.

Their bite is supposed to be pretty painful.

I've always wondered how painful, really. I might try with our Redback version some day (basically the same thing), which are everywhere here.

So these are called red back spiders here in Australia. They must be an introduced species in Houston. The bight is very painful and will produce sweating around the bight site. Don't muck around with those, nuke 'em every chance you get...

I think they’re native all over the US.
