I was wondering if you could recommend any "must visit" beaches along the West Coast of the US. Places where I could plan a future spring break with friends. Someplace nice for the late-20 something crowd. Thanks in advance.

If, on the other hand, you are not going to act like an imbecile, here are some beaches....

Warning: Do not kill the wildlife! Morons like you get our beaches closed by local military bases.

Warnign: Do not damage the flora! Morons like you piss me off.

- Surf (Lompoc, always freezing cold air and warm water)
- Anything by Santa Barbara (especially when it is warm in the summer)
- Pismo
- Jalama

Ignore everything else.

By santa cruz you can camp on bonny doon beach, the city patrols the highway so its no parking after dark, but its a state beach so the sheriffs have no jurisdiction to kick you off.

The whole central coast is beautiful. From Santa Barbara up to Monterey. There are a hundreds of wonderful spots. Personally, my favorite town is Morro Bay, because it's striking and beautiful. There are elephant seal herds nearby it that you can walk around and look at. In Los Osos just south of Morro Bay, there's a beautiful wetland reserve you can wander around. The bay has sea otters and sea lions galore, and you can walk along the boardwalk by the marina, and stare into the water to water hoards of moon jellies float by.

It's very pretty, and pic related.

It's also wine country, so you can head over to Paso Robles and do wine tasting tours. But if you meant spring break like drunken, violent, loud and obnoxious? You won't be particularly welcome in that area.

Another pic from Morro Bay area. Maybe that's a tentacle monster emerging from its cave... but it's probably just kelp.

My very personal favorite, not-terribly-long backpacking trip is right out of Independence, half an hour north of Lone Pine. Turn left at the museum and drive until you get to onion valley, then hike up to Kearsarge pass and look down on this ridiculously beautiful place that you can go camp and swim in. It's only seven-ish miles from the parking lot, the pass takes you above the tree-line and then back down beneath it. It's very, very pretty.

Hey! I recognize that rock face. I like to go up a little further, past the bridge. Take a jeep along some of the dirt roads once the highway splits to the right, and there are amazing camping spots.

It's not much for backpacking, though. It's day-hike territory, since there's a highway following the length of it (pic is a friend's--not mine).

my bad, dusy basin is over bishop pass not kearsarge, next pass north from independence, south lake trailhead.

I was just in that area thru-hiking the jmt, kings canyon looks like that in a lot of places, its a eerily desolate, yet beautiful place

We go far enough up the trail that it is rare to see people walking. Although the river does get a lot of other traffic; kayaks mostly. There were also people rock climbing down right across from our campsite.

Pretty sure you can hike between the two passes, given a few days. I never get further than King's Canyon because I love it there. I kept wanting to get up to Ray Lakes above Kings Canyon, but never got around to it and am temporarily not Californian. Here's a nice picture from Kearsarge pass that looks more like it does in my head.

Rae lakes is still in the park, you can hike there from onion valley if you go over kearsarge and then hop over glen pass. if you are fit you can push glen and kearsarge in a day (20 mile day)

there is a lesser known pass just north of rae lakes, but its "unmaintained" which probably means some duck finding and scrambling required,

Is this where the little waterfall is, if you go up that side? Like, where the big bridge over the river is, you head northeast on that day trail, and eventually get to where the little waterfall runs out? Can't seem to find a pic of us at it.

Very pretty place, I've only been through that area briefly, we crossed from sierra national forrest and crossed the entire park in 4 days (muir pass, pinchot pass, glen pass, and forestor pass) from evolution valley to whitney, so most of it is an exhausted blur.

Would love to spend more time doing shorter trips to explore the park better

You are more hardcore than I. My backpacking trips are very casual and don't require much of us. I kinda just grab some crap and wander around on trails, then stop when it's pretty.
