I've spent most of my time here in footwear, although I'm moving soon to packs/travel/field gear.
At the bigger stores, everybody has a specific department that they work, although most employees are trained to work in multiple departments because demands changes seasonally. At the smaller stores, people tend to work multiple departments at once.

The pay is not great, but the non-monetary compensation (benefits, discounts, etc) is good and it really is a fun place to work most of the time.
We have two big hiring fairs a year, one in the spring and one in the fall and then we spot-hire for christmas and summer as needed. Contact your local store and see if they have any openings.
