Yes. But on my home mountain I could "survive" with the contents of my riding jacket.
The size of your pack depends on your activity and travel plans. Are you going alone? Will you be hiking daily? Do you fish, hunt, or trap? What kind of food do you bring?
I do fine with a 30L, a gas can, and large saddlebags. For a standard trip:
-The pack contains dried food, machete, a folding stove, spare knife, maps and compass, socks, shorts, hat, fishing poles/tackle, Bible, bandages, chordage, and water/cup.
-Left bag has shelter, blanket, folding chair, and road snacks. Right includes motor oil, toolkit, zip ties, skillet, raw food, food bag, and weather specific items.
-On my person are documents, knife, phone, keys, compass, line and flies, lighters, rosary, pressure gauge, and flint.
Keep in mind as you pack, you need to keep the most important items closer to your body. In the given example, lighters and knife in jeans; line and documents in jacket; canteen and machete in pack; chair and skillet on bike.
