I can't imagine thinking it similar to bass, however. Do you play claw, three finger, or Scruggs? I tend to do a little Scruggs, more three finger, and mostly claw/mountain. To me the open back mountain banjer is a relatively simple (in that it's open tuning, just 5 strings, somewhat light weight), Zen instrument. The sounds it produces go well with natural environments. I very much enjoy simple drones with laces with occasional punctuated tones, tuned in and harmoniously participating with the natural surrounding sounds.
