But if you got your head out his ass for 5 mins you might actually realise how getting excited for trails like the AT blinds you to some of the better outdoor experiences the US has to offer. Also if you had any experience you would realise that the only challenge trails like the AT pose is a test a patience. I know, I hiked it. It's physically tough in places, however, the logistics, navigation, alltitude, terrain, weather, pose no real challenges. The idea that hiking the AT makes you experienced in any way is a bit of a joke. Now if OP had hiked it in the winter I'd be very impressed, that's a much more serious challenge and would require some real knowledge and experience.
At best the AT is a very cozy intro to long distance hiking. But I'd argue the Long Trail might by a better option for those wanting to explore hiking in the East Coast. That or maybe the Pinhoti Trail. But even those also have a fucking app that tells you exactly where you are, where the campsites, privies, water sources, road crossing, towns, etc are.
For christ's sake the sections of the AT that go through NY and JY let you eat at a deli everyday. I literally bought hot food from has stations almost every day. NH and ME are the only decent bit of the trail.
