I'm beginning to believe the fish in the spots I visit regularly aren't interested in topwater lures. That aside, I got one on a rooster tail for the first time in a long time today and I'm starting to really like dropshotting over the jigging I usually have so much luck with.

Dropshotting is the easiest and most consistent way to catch fish for me as well. It mostly comes down to picking a length of how much off the bottom I want to be and then the fish catch themselves.

I've fished saltwater my entire life but I'm going to take a camping trip near the Shenandoah River (south fork) in about a week and want to catch some smallmouth bass. How do I do this? What lures? Can I just use some smaller jigheads I typically use for stripers/specks? I have a 3000 size reel with like 15 pound braid that I usually use 20lb flouro leader with, will this be too heavy for smallies?

So I live near Lake Michigan and I plan on trying to fish the rivers for salmon this fall, but I'm having trouble figuring out what kind of line I'm supposed to be using. Will 20 lb monofilament work? Should I use heavy braid, or are salmon line shy like trout and be scared off by it?
I really don't have much experience with fish this big

Top water only works for me when its early morning/late evening or when it's really cloudy. Fish can't really close their eyes so they avoid the surface except in low light conditions. Then again hammer handle pike will eat a frog at high noon

20 lb mono is what I use. Dont use braid. They pull too hard and will bind up on your reel. What river are you looking at fishing?

Theres more than a few ways to go. Some guys use skein with an eggloop knot, some guys use thundersticks, some guys use a chuck and duck which is flossing, some guys use a treble with a spawn bag, but any way works just as good as another, just depends on the fish. Find a river bend and just keep working the holes.

The reel that came with my $30 light combo is starting to fail and I'm super sad about it. It became my go to setup and I've fished with it almost once a week for a year now. Nearly every fish I've caught this past year has been with that super cheap combo.

Depends on what you are going to fish for I suppose... some are more specialised than others. Nothing beats going to the local store though. Especially if you are not entirely sure what you need.
If you know your category I suppose I could guide you in the right direction. Else there are plenty to pick from. Just go to eg. www.123.nu and check out which stores advertise there (Danish stores).

That sounds perfect for smallies. A 1/4 ounce or lighter jig head or bucktail jig with a white curl tail grub will be a good option. You could also pick up a 110 whopper plopper in bone, and/or a few husky jerks, and nose hooking a white fluke with a dropshot hook and fishing it unweighted is also a good option

Holy shit son, you want to feel the fish bite, go way lower with weight! I fish 4lb, but 8lb would be a max, medium action. It's what your comfortable with but braid is pretty damn large for a river (even if south fork Shanandoah) from VA, haven't gone there yet so I am inexperienced in bigger water.

Alright guys, I'm seriously considering taking the plunge and getting into fly fishing.
I enjoy catching trout, small bass, perch, and panfish on an ultralight spinning and BFS setup so I figured that I might as well learn how to fly fish just to expand my arsenal of skills and to have fun with it as well. Most of my fishing is done in lakes, small ponds, and narrow rivers/creeks.
I'm looking for a fly setup that's around 3wt or 4wt and very portable as I bicycle and backpack to most of my fishing locations. FWIW none of my ultralight or BFS rods exceed 5'6" in length.
My budget is around $250 CAD which isn't a lot from my research but I don't mind spending a bit more if that means a huge leap in quality. I prioritize quality, portability, and ease of use over price. I'd prefer if I can get stuff in Canada than importing from the USA.
If a fly fisherman can point me in the right direction or provide me some recommendations to start with it would be much appreciated.

I've gotten two of those rods so far and honestly no complaints. The reels are predictably shitty but the rod itself holds up pretty well. I've gotten a lot of use out of it and have landed 10+ lb fish no problem. Switched out the stock reel for the KastKing Centron 500 btw

Well, you will definitely want a fiberglass fly rod. I'd reccomend a 4 weight. Id say go for a cabelas cgr (not sure if you will have to import it or not) and fly reel wont matter much, i use an echo base fly reel on my cabelas cgr. Then you basically just need a small assortment of flies and leaders. I highly reccomend tying your own leaders, you'd really only need #15, #10, and #6 mono (not sure what that is in kg) and 5x tippet to supplement as needed, or you can just buy tapered leaders, but they get expensive fast. Some strike indicators are a good idea, then you will need flies. I'd say start with nymphs and streamers- pheasant tails are good imitations of mayfly nymphs and smaller stone fly nymphs, and hares ears can be scuds, caddid, mayfly nymphs. Dead drift them near the bottom under an indicator. Wooly buggers in white black and olive immitate leeches, minnows, helgramites, large stonefly nymphs, and are versatile. Strip them, swing them, or dead drift them under an indicator. Parachute adams are a good general mayfly imitation and peacock caddis (elk hair caddis variation) is pretty much all you wil need dryfly wise. Waders are an option but not necessary except in cold weather.

Graphite is best for faster action rods, and more distance. Fiberglass is better because it "loads itself" which basically just means the rod can bend with little or even no line out of the rod. That isn't to say i cant push a 40 foot cast with my 6'2" fiberglass 2 weight or that i cant push 90 foot casts with my fiberglass 8 weight but when i have to make a delicate flick less than 20 feet id rather have glass than qnything else. On top of that, its got a lot of bend, which is superb for protecting light tippet and keeping a small hook secure in a fish's mouth, and thirdly they have more "feel" while casting them which is good for any skill level. Echo, orvis, redington, sage, rio, scientific anglers, and some cabelas stuff is all really solid. Like i said, the cgr is probably your best bang/buck ratio at $80 usd. Most fiberglass 3 or 4 weights will be in the 6'6"-8 foot range. A longer rod is better for bow and arrow casting because you can bow and arrow cast farther, but a shorter rod will be fine. Its all about matching gear to conditions and your conditions sound like a short, light fiberglass fly rod is perfect.

Thanks for the rec. I have a UL setup with a shitty reel (which hasn't broken yet, but it's all plastic so a matter of time) which has damage around the front of the spool, which really interferes with casting because it snags the line. The stores near me I've checked either don't have any small spinning reels, or have the right size spinning reels for more than I'm willing to spend. This one seems right up my alley.

I watched a test on Youtube a while back. The braid was listed by diameter, and not poundage test. No matter the thickness, it kept breaking at pretty light weights. I don't know exactly which braid it was, but it was the cheapest the guy found on Amazon. But that's sort of the problems with no-name importers: It's a crap shoot. You might get a spool of reasonable quality stuff, or you might get a spool of weakshit that frays apart when you try to hold up a sinker with it. At the very least, a company that cares about its brand will care enough to at least attempt consistent quality so that's less likely to happen.

From what I hear the fishing pressure is too high at Heart Lake and not many people manage to catch trout. Most end up catching small bass and panfish.

Stocked in late may. Good cold day too and every fish survived. Fishing pressure is high but still doable. Try a 3/4 oz egg weight on a Carolina rig with a 1.5 m long flourocarbon leader. Powerbait eggs work really well.

Try finesse worms. Hooked into a nice 2-3 lb bass Sunday with just a ned rigged Berkley powerbait worm. Keep quiet when you catch fish though. On a weekend you will have jabronis clambering for your spot the minute they see you pull out a decent fish.

Sinking baits might not be too effective. The powerbait eggs are effective because they float off the bottom and the 3/4 oz weight will take your bait anywhere you want.

That's why I could recognize this fish as Icelandic. Not many lakes around the globe have arctic char of this size with a subterminal mouth. This is the snail feeding variety of the char species in this lake if I am right. Arctic char is my favourite fish.

I caught a few of these bass in a pond the other day over 3-4 hours the other day. I saw a few bigger ones but had trouble gettin their attention among the others. I used a medium sized spinner with a worm on it and then switched to a larger one in an attempt to lure the bigger fish. Any tips for attracting the big boys ? I had tremendous success with both topwater and medium depth fishing. Would the bigger ones be more oriented to deeper depths?
I believe I had a few bites from some larger bass but of course, they took the lure right off the line both times. I was so pissed they took like 15$ Of spinner off me lol. I’m fishing this specific pond in the evening so if that makes a difference

If the rod is a more delicate construction method you could possibly break the tip, but that's unlikely with modern rods. What will happen is that just the action of the lure may load the rod up really bad which means it won't have as much travel to use absorbing the shock of a strike, which increases the risk of breaking off a lure or breaking the rod this way. It also won't have the spine to set the hook properly for larger hooks and fish.

But 10 grams over on a 50 gram rod is nothing, most of these warnings apply more seriously when you look at 75+% overages, not 20% overages.

Mepps #0s for stream trout (got about a dozen colors) and Mepps #5 for pike (have like 6 colors). Vibrax Blue Foxes are also good.

I mostly use spoons and Rapalas for both though.

1. Depends. Are you fishing lily pads/thick vegetation mats or are you fishing more scarce cover/open water? If it’s the latter, throw on 50lb braid and you’ll be fine. I wouldn’t test fishing lily pads with a medium heavy.

As for warm, stained water, I would try something that gives off vibrations. Spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, paddletail swimbaits, and lipless crankbaits will all work. Wacky rigs and drop shots could work if you’re using black worms and targeting very specific pieces of cover.

If the water is very weedy I'll throw the topwater lure on strong braid to rip through it.
However that usually gets me reaction strikes and not much else.
Maybe a suspending crankbait will work. Or a weedless Senko rig without letting it get too deep.

The only thing that gets the bass in my pond to bite is reaction strikes, so def. will try topwater.

The only thing that consistently gets me bass in my pond is using ultralight tackle and a 1" nymph on a 1/32 Oz jighead barely below the water, fishing it erratically. Kinda surprised I even get fish to strike it since it's such a small bait, the water makes it so the fish can't see shit, but me fishing this 1" nymph fast as shit gets bites like crazy.

Maybe I'll try throwing a weightless, wacky rigged senko and fishing it the same way so instead of 1-2 pound bass I can finally get 4+ pounders consistently.

Use heavier line. Maybe you can increase your drag. Many beginners set their drag too low for the line they are using as well. Sometimes you just have to put finger pressure on the spool and go all or nothing to turn fish away from structure.
If the fish already goes into the structure, you can loosen the tension and give the line some slack and move toward the structure for new angle. Sometimes, the fish would leave the structure themselves. If not, the slack line might allow the fish to throw the hook so you can get your tackle back

That said, if you're looking for a relatively big ticket item then a way to get out onto the water instead of being stuck on the shore is easily the best investment you could make. If you spend all of your money on a kayak/skiff/canoe/etc. and then sell enough blowjobs to afford a $20 spincasting combo from Wal-Mart you'll already be way ahead of someone who spent the same amount of money on a top shelf rod/reel/tackle/etc. but who has to fish from shore.

What kind of line are you using? When I was starting out, I used mono. Then I had some bull reds break me off. They get hooked, run for structure, and the line breaks. Now I use 30 lb braid and 40 lb mono leader. Adjusting the drag helps. If you can, try to steer them away from trouble.

I've been saltwater bass and game fishing my whole life, and just recently got into freshwater bass fishing. I'm having trouble with fish getting into super thick cover and then coming off. I have just been tightening my drag super tight and as soon as I get hooked up I just reel as fast as I can. Any other ways to avoid this problem?

Also, What are some good lures to fish thick cover? I was fishing a golf course pond today and kept seeing huge boils in the middle of cover. Caught this one today in open water, on the course, it was a shallow pond. I was using a texas rigged 8 inch purple/black curly tail worm.

What power is your rod? If it's a medium heavy then your best bet is to use a top water frog since it won't get hung up. If you happen to have a heavy power rod then look up "tacticalbassin punch rig".

Yeah for heavy cover its best to use a heavier baitcasting setup like a 7' heavy rod and 50 lb + test braided line so u can horse them in through all that shit. Some lures which would work good in grass and mats are some pitching/flipping jigs and also hollow bodied frogs.

The necessity for a mono/fluoro leader with freshwater fishing has more to do with tying knots. Braid is pretty fucking shit tier at tying knots because if there's abrasive contact it can fray the knot, and braid has a harder time gripping itself to form a knot that won't slip as easy. Usually the way to get around this is tying the knots differently by threading the line through, looping around the eyelet, then proceeding to tie the knot normally.

Man, Urban fishing is fucking tough. Too many swimmers/boaters. I swear some areas of the country could be ready for Syndicate Lakes, as the State Governments have done jackshit to preserve fishing access for shore based anglers.

Even "fishing" piers turn into swimming holes once air temps pop up above 70'.

Any one else encounter these problems?

Thankfully Im going to be moving to a rural area in the next few months with great fishing, but does any one else experience problems with bank access?

I second this guy’s suggestion. I have two tenkara rods, one for dries and one for euro nymphing, and it’s not unusual for me to catch 30+ fish in a day or fish over 20”. The whole thing about not being able to catch all of the fish that you could on a Western rod becomes moot because you can generally cover much more ground more quickly with the tenkara and so present your fly to more fish overall. Just my experience though. Western fly fishing is just as fun and effective if you know what you’re doing.

Kayak muskie anon here, after thinking about it, I am now looking into the possibility of buying my buddies transom mount trolling motor and putting it on my kayak. I think it would really help me keep on weedlines more accurately and I wouldn't have to rely on the wind when deciding where I drift. Anybody got any suggestions for a rod that can throw lighter lures on the beach and in the surf? I need a rod that can throw 1/4 to 1oz lures for Spanish mackerel and speckled trout but still be long enough to give me plenty of casting distance. Most standard surf rods are too heavy for what I need. I've considered buying a steelhead rod and see if that works but I dunno.

I think a fly rod can be useful for a well rounded bass and panfish angler. Bass love dragonflies, grasshoppers, and whatnot. I'll always carry my 6wt when I'm pond hopping in the summer in case I see bass keying in on dragonflies.

Medium Steelhead rods are fine.
Medium light models (varied a bit brand to brand) of inshore rods can also be good. Inshore rods typically only reach 8 ft with only few 9ft here and there but imo 8 ft is fine for light tackle beach fishing.

Dubs confirm. Bass most definitely love cicadas and I've caught a few on some cicada patterns I ordered. Bluegill and other panfish like them too even though they can barely fit them in their mouths.

I have never understood even bothering with easily accessible "public fishing" spots (as opposed to fishing in the wild on public lands). A friend recently took me kayaking on a medium sized public "recreation" lake and it was covered in bass boats, ramps with people in line to ether put in or out, tons of people competing for spots, didn't actually witness anyone catch anything the whole time.

Anyone ever seen one of these? I had to take my son to catch a shuttle back to college and was near my dad's town so visited him on the way back. I told him about me soon going to live innawoods soon and fishing for food so he took me out to his storage room and gave me some of his lures. Among them was this Lazy Ike that he's had since at least the 70s that I myself can recall. He hooked me up with a trout creel, too.
