Anyone else scavenge roadkill for their pelts?
>Don't need to trap or hunt them
>Still harvest great quality fur-bearers
You need a trapping license to do this legally, and it is more highly monitored on large game animals like deer. Anyone like pelts? I have not seen many posts about pelt retrieval

This reminds me of this deterritorialized hillbilly family I knew growing up. The lot of them would go squirrel hunting and kill about 50 squirrels by the end of the day, only to throw them away to eat hamburger helper for dinner. I can't imagine there's much available meat
I eat wild duck, goose, grouse, frogs, and literally any fish I catch (even carp), but not squirrel

Dont soak it too long.

I'll shampoo the fur after smoking it, but you gotta be very careful not to get the skin wet. Smoking will make it somewhat water resistant, but you still want to keep it as dry as you can.

i would say smoking and braining are not fully required, depending on the animal. using salt is very often used if you're going for something like the OP picture

Salt makes the pelt shitty and it's much harder to soften, trappers only salt them because they're selling to a buyer who's going to chemical tan the hide and work it with a machine. But smoking isn't necessary though it keeps bugs off and makes it more water resistant.

Can you describe how the pelt will be 'made shitty'? I believe you but I am wondering what kind of end product I will get out of following the salting tutorials available online vs the brain method

I dont, I'll put it in a double boiler and smash until its liquid. The salt makes it very rough and hard, mostly shitty because it's hard to work with without chemicals and a machine to soften it.
All animals do have enough brain to tan their own hide except buffalo and a couple people I know.

And to answer the original question, they take the fur off by soaking it for a couple days until it falls out. 12 hours will allow the alum ammonia to do its job while keeping the hair.

Also I started practicing on opossum and raccoon I killed on my parents farm. Be very careful scraping opossum skin, it's very thin and scraping too much will also cause the hair to fall out. Look into getting a hide scraping tool, it's much much less work and helps keep you from scraping too much. And you can get a good one around $50.

I heard Opossums are the best to practice on. I gotta get the right tools but I am setting up a 'pelt station' outside next to my home. Got a perfect condition possum that died from a car one night but I didnt have the right tools and didnt feel fully confident so i simply gave him a burial.
I want to collect pelts from roadkill primarily, there is a lot of it around where I live so I see no reason to kill when cars are doing it regardless.
Anyone want to post their pelts? I ordered a cheap possum case skin online will post pictures when it comes

What are you using as a fleshing beam? We just used a maybe 4" diamter pvc pipe section.

And to get it soft you need to stretch it and work it a lot, that's the only way to make it softer without chemicals. Or alternatively use Google if these answers aren't good enough for you.

so far i scrape until no meat or tissue
boil the brains and rub/soak the brain solution onto the hide.trying to work the hide the whole time.
after about 24 hours of waiting i smoke it until its dry and seems tanned usually like 6-8 hours

and itll last forever this way but its not soft

also google hasnt helped a bit, like how much do i scrape? if i scrape anymore it just puts holes in the hide.
what do you mean by working it?
i "work" the hide by stetching and pulling with my hands while smearing the brain into it.

All I did was search "soften hide" and it was the first video. So I dont know how you're using Google, but you're doing it wrong.

Plywood should be fine if you sanded it well, lotta old timers just used an old stump.

I used #330s and #110 body grip traps mostly. #160s seemed like a waste to me since those are more groundhogs or porcupines. Cheap out on your #110s and buy the highest quality on #220 or over. #220 for fishercat bucket-pole sets, but I never got one of those.
I had a beautiful roadkilled silver grey fox, a nice coyote bitch pelt, and a number of ~60lb beaver pelts that were going to go into a quilt when I lost it all.

Mikereedoutdoors is your friend, if his video doesn't cover it, email him and ask politely and that guy will tell you anything ypu could know about trapping.

The smoking and working can go in either order really, but make sure you do the other stuff first. By the way you can get the alum ammonia st walmart in the baking section, I get mine at a local Amish Market, it's still pretty natural and cheap where I am. I usually do about a half cup of alum ammonia in about 2 gallons water. It helps take out the the rottable proteins.
