What is a good all around spinning setup? I go from my UL right to my bass baitcaster. I want a good ned rig and steelhead spinner rod that I can fill with 10-15 pound braid or 8lb mono. Is the stradic worth it?

A very long rod is unnecessary if you know what you're doing. I've gotten away with 6'6" rods and wouldn't go above 7' as it gets rather unwieldy for me at that point.

PowerPro braid is my go to, it has never failed me.

Caught a pb smallmouth almost by accident. Buddy took me fishing with his pops they had a dead minnow so I threw it out under a bobber with my backup telescoping zebco and bullshit chinese reel, thing almost spooled me.

Got out on the Ohio river last night to hook into some nice blues. Shad were killing them out there, probably saw over a thousand or so busting around the boat. Got three of these, with this being the biggest, a nice striper and a decent drum

Something able to cast light lures is what I'm saying. If I'm throwing big jigs I'll use my MH baitcasting rod. Usually I use my ultralight for trout but I'd rather a medium action for steelhead.

It has to be a crappie lure or something. I’m probably wrong, but for some reason the little larger ones seem like deep diving walleye lures, but the one I have looks too small for anything but baby walleye.

Yeah, seems about right. I'll probably give it a go in various circumstances using varied methodology and just see what does or doesn't happen. The old ads mention bass, walleye, and pike, I think it was, but they had larger ones in the line as well. The ads and original packages also proclaimed them to be "the successor to the live minnow".

Do it, neegle, sounds neat, is it anywhere near about the same size as mine? The history of the lure is pretty cool, starting in 1897, then a fellow bought the rights and they were all hand made up into the 40s, then lathe turned wood, hand painted until 1960 when they went to plastic.

In my experience fishing here is pretty mediocre across the board. I get good days, and I get really bad days. The bad days usually outnumber the good.
Even in Muskoka you'll need to get out there on a boat if you're looking for good results.

Get a 12'+

If you want to cast lighter stuff look into Carp Rods at that length.

If heavier, look into normal surf rods.

Daiwa BG is a great saltwater reel if you're on a budget.

You can definitely do better if you have a much bigger budget and also have the skill to match, but the Daiwa BG is a good starting point to work with and should be able to handle almost everything you throw at it. You can always upgrade to fancier and more expensive reels in the future. The money saved right now would be better spent on lures as you'll lose quite a few when surf fishing.

For fishing through dense underwater foliage your line and rod will play a bigger role in your success to rip through it once you set your hook in a fish.
Get a good braid like PowerPro and a rod that's strong enough to handle that.

Leopards fishing is better at the shallow sandy area. They are very plenty and active in shallow water as shallow as 5-10 ft. they might be in the kelp too but it will be harder to land while in kelp. 30 lb is okay if that’s what you have but you probably can go up to 40-50 lb so you don’t need to put so much lines in the reel (depend on what reel size and capacity you have) and you can horse really big fish out if you really need to.

Been fishing a brackish lagoon(more salt than fresh). Caught largemouth, catfish, redfish, trout, snook, tarpon, ladyfish, and jack crevalle in this spot(fishing from a bank). I go out sometimes and get nothing - even though I can see the tarpon rolling in the middle of the lake. Can't cast that far. At night I hear these HUGE POPS and BANGS and WHOOSHES and it's got to be large tarpon and snook hitting whatever. It's in the middle or somewhere else I can't get to. Was walking along the bank and scared something enormous - made a huge WHOOSH. So loud thought it was a gator but nothing surfaced. Big tarpon? How do catch fish making all the noise? Been using finger mullet and men-haden on circle hooks under a popping cork. Most activity to be on the incoming tide. Ideas?

Right? I do a lot of ultralight and I've caught 6 lb bass on 1/32nd oz crankbaits using 4 lb florocarbon, but every lure I lose is to a Northern.

They are always a riot when on the line though, I've been considering pre-tying my 1/8th oz spoons to a 1 foot leader of 20 lb florocarbon to target them, but my UL box fits in my back pocket and I don't know how I'd keep it small if I start keeping leaders tied to lures.

I've got a few setups now that really call for keeping leaders pre-tied. I've been just wrapping them around cardboard dogbones but I'm not happy with that setup overall. I keep it to a minimum obviously but it almost needs its own box for all the mess it makes if it gets tangled.

If you release them right where you caught them so they can return to their bed it's not as bad. You also gotta be mindful not to cast completely at the bed. I prefer to fish pre and post spawn. Asshole tournament anglers catching spawning bass and targeting their bed and then releasing them miles away from their bed is fucked up and helps ruin the population.

My hot rod right now is a Eagle Claw Featherlight UL 5'6" 2 piece with a Shimano AX500 reel. Like $35 total because the reel was on clearance for the end of ice fishing season. I bought this setup because my 1 piece Clarus UL and Sahara 500 setup didn't fit nicely behind the seat in my regular cab pickup, so I decided to make it a boat rod only.

The pricier setup is nicer to fish with, and I caught my PB largemouth on it, but the floppy piece of shit yellow 2 piece has probably 10 times as many fish under it's belt, and I've only had it since June.

I can huck a 0.8g spoon 20 yards with either, though at my usual bank fishing spots there's little call for that, bombing a lure that far that isn't a scumfrog will get you snagged like fuck every cast. Otoh, it feels good to drop a tiny spoon or plug right in the mouth of the bass that the plebs can't even reach with their baitcaster frogging setups.

Depends more on the conditions. In open lakes with no cover on a spinning rod I'll never go above 8, but if its full of lily pads I'm gonna use 30lb braid at the bare minimum plus a leader 5-15lbs less than the braid.

I hold pike by the gill cover and support the rest of the fish with my other arm. If I need to get a treble out of its mouth, I use a pliers on the hook and a spreader on the jaws.

Generally pike are pretty helpful about being unhooked compared to bass or walleye or whatever, they tend to get hooked in the corner of their mouth and don't have a lot of delicate bone structures to have to be careful with.

This is pretty much true, but muskie are terrible. They like to open their mouth as wide as possible and shake it as soon as you let your guard down with the pliers in their mouth. I nearly got my hand destroyed and/or had a muskie take off with my rod.

Braid. Depends on what kind of fishing, but 30 lb PowerPro braid and 1.5-2 ft. of 40 lb. mono leader works for me. From little pinfish to 40 inch redfish and 5 ft. sharks - does the trick.

Reason I recommend braid is, whether it's bait or lures, fish run for trouble when hooked. Oysters, barnacles, pilings, etc. will break mono. Braid's a better bet.

I don't really get why people gravitate towards tenkara as novices, you will be very limited in where and how you can fish, and I wouldn't be surprised if it led to limited success and frustration. Keep in mind there's a reason large stores stock primarily spinning rods and their appropriate lures, because that's what most people use and find success with. I've literally never caught anything on a traditional skirted spinner. Plenty on Beetle Spins and other jighead + plastic trailer spinners though.

Those are stocked in the Ohio river with very few actually reproducing in the water, and that is about as big as they get in the Ohio. Some get a bit bigger but none the size of Atlantic migrating fish, although I hear people taking them is doing massive damage to their populations there

You have a rod and reel that holds the kite by a line and then you have a drop line from the kite that drops the bait down. Getting all the gear to kite fish is costly as you need a specific rod and reel and a specific kite and the rigging gear for the drop line. You may as well just get a cheap kayak instead.

I feel like mono holds up way better under abrasion than braid. That's just what I've always been told, but my only experience
is that I've had braid snap on casts after it touched a dock before.

Of course you can, but I'd still recommend if you really want to start with fishing, go get a run of the mill 15$ spinning Rod and reel setup from Walmart or whatever, and 20 bucks worth of assorted lures. I did exactly like your describing, wanted to get into fishing and thought fly fishing was the most aesthetic so bought a nice reel rod combo and spent weeks tying flies. I had basically no luck and it took months before I dove back in with "conventional" tackle. My advice would be start basic, like hook and worms basic, until you learn about where fish are and what they like to do, because without that fundamental knowledge you're going to be lost in a river waving a stick around getting tangled on top of it. I use my fly tackle MAYBE 5% of the time and still don't catch dick most times. I'm not saying don't because I sure didn't listen when I started, but know it's starting at level 5 instead of 1.

Hate to say it, but its Y0 and Y1 survival rates that are probably fucking the fishery. And these low survival rates are due to shitty habitat, bad water quality, and poor food sources.

You could end commercial fishing, and have Obama fly around a helicopter shooting poachers, and the Fishery would still suck. The solution to the problem is practically impossible to implement.

Bros I was at my local city pond (in a park with 10 soccer fields, a football field, a disc golf course, and a big pond/ creek) and I was tired of bass fishing so I was sight fishing Carp with floating white bread, anyways I caught a nice 9lb common and I gave it to two elderly Japanese fishers nearby me who were catching bluegill with ice fishing rods.

I felt bad for them because they suck at fishing and I saw them keeping 2 inch bluegill in a bucket. But as I left the park I felt bad for not putting the Common Carp back... the pond is a Rouge river drain and carp are plentiful but I still feel bad. I even taught the old men how to float bread to catch them. Did I do something wrong, or is it the inner ecofascist in me that's giving me guilt?

Its cheaper to buy a fucking high end echo sounder, and a 1k inflatable boat with a motor that can take your lines out much further, and much faster, with bare minimum maintenance compared to the hell that is EuroBait Boats.

Also those cheapo 100$ amazon chink boats are shit. Don't but those. Tip over in tiny amounts of chop, the range is less than you can cast. Pointless except for some cases maybe where you want a bait tight to a dock, or a structure of some sort.

Also an inflatable boat probably fucking weighs less than a BaitBoat and all its kit.

I don't know if its a cultural thing. But Chinks do not give a fuck about big fish. They will sit on the docks smoking cigarettes tossing 2" panfish and suckers into plastic bags until sunfall. And go home and have there wifes cook the fish.

Also coming from a guy who mainly targets carp. Eating a 9lb carp is perfectly fine. Its like bonking a 12" Rainbow Trout or something, the fish that size are a dime a dozen, and not even close to trophy size.

If you had killed a 30lber+ I'd probably tell you to soduku though.

Bowfishing for Bass should be legal. As it protects Native Fish, and bass arnt even that good of a fight on a rod and reel anyways.

The best time to go bowfishing for bass where legal is during bass tournaments. The bass anglers whip up so many waves and zip around the lake so fast the bass start darting around like crazy, making it fun to shoot them with a bow and arrow, and it also pushes them out of heavy cover.

Like retard slow. Once I figured that out i always have a jig tied on to a rod. And they’re very versatile for the most part. You can swim jigs to cover water and just kill it around structure. Let it sit for about 30 seconds and then shake it but don’t move it. That’s the key.

There's nothing wrong with eating carp but they do have a demonstrable negative impact on native fisheries. I never put a carp back in the water. I eat the ones from 1-10 lbs, use the little ones as cut bait, and use the big ones as fertilizer. I never leave a fish on the bank, but I keep every carp I catch.

Just bought a used Stella FI for $280 off a forum, matched it with a used Loomis Conquest I got off the same forum for a ridiculous deal. This is one dumb combo. I thought my Stradic Ci4+ was smooth, but a Stella is on a whole other level. Well that's where these 2 came from. But I've also used it at 2 ponds that hold several 2-5 pound largemouth where a the majority of its fishing pressure comes from old boomers drowning worms and powerbait and only managed 1 1.5lber that I foul hooked. I used it at Chickamauga during mayfly season missed a 3/4lb dink under a rock overhang on a shitty hookset and missed another which may have been 2 that grabbed the lure after a bad cast that looped over a tree branch.

Hey guys, going out for a resort in a couple weeks, it has a small lake in it that's 8m average depth 22m depth max.

Just fished a very high end lake. I parked outside of the gate of a very nice 2 million dollar home and fished on a very nice dock.

There were no no trespassing signs so I don't see anything wrong with what I did.

The land owner came outside screaming. Asking me to leave his property.

Shocked at how rude he was. I asked him if this was private property.

He said yes.

I told him there were no no trespassing signs so how could I have known?

Enraged he told me he was calling the cops.

As a precaution. I hopped off his dock into the lake, and inflated the one pull instant inflatable float tube I carry in my fishing vest.

In doing so I knocked over the 50lb bag of corn I was using to Chum this guy's lake into the water.

When the police arrived I informed them I was not on his property but was trapped and needed some sort of way to access public lands as his property surrounded this lake, but the water above the lakebed was public and I was just trying to get home.

The police asked the property owner if he had a public easement. He said no.

The police then gave him a ticket for entrapment on public lands.

I also caught 3 carp.

Any tent campers out there?

I'm looking for a 1 man tent that can withstand heavy winds, and rain. I'd like to be able to use the tent in the snow as well, but I know that most of these nylon tents are probably shit for it. Going to be using it as a basecamp for fishing.

Also any suggestion on small inflatable rafts? Mainly just going to be using it to get to different spots for fishing from shore, and mapping out features. Might use the boat to chum areas where legal.

Mainly just car camping at State Parks. I'd sleep in my Jeep, but I've done that before, and unless I store my gear outside, its a bit too cramped, and sleeping at an angle on a folded down back seat kinda sucks as well.

I should also mention, that the places I'll probably be camping are on the Columbia River, and some of the resevoirs / irrigation lakes connected to it.

Winds can rip through there pretty good, and its not uncommon to have 40-60mph winds, and less frequently some heavy rainfall.

Once me and my brother were fishing for pike and smallies on a submerged rock garden and were just wind drifting across it pretty fast, the rocks got shallower and shallower and we had to choose between putting the motor down and getting out, risking breaking a 8k motor , or wait until we drifted over it. We dented the pontoon slightly on one rock and the sonar transducer took the blow of another rock and absolutely destroyed the mount. The transducer still works fine. As does the pontoon.

Its awkward to reel it in, and monitor your cellphone. And if you have a case around your phone it can mess with the signal sometimes.

But its extremely useful for feature finding. Locating dropoffs etc.

Theres a more expensive Chirp version. But all I use mine for is looking for holes in the weed, and dropoffs. It has a GPS function, saves all the scans, and makes maps for you as well.

My first trout today. Was trying all summer but no luck. Hundreds of creek chins, shad, and a few dozen smallmouth. Is there a bad decomposing smell?
If there isn't and the worms haven't turned into almost liquid jelly then you should still be able to use them.
Normally worms/nightcrawlers are supposed to be stored like that in a fridge (around 3-5 degrees Celsius).
