Second, it's not going to be solid cornfields and rolling meth labs (it skips Indiana). The eastern sections will go through the foothills of the Appalachians, western Michigan will be influenced by Lake Michigan and probably includes some dunes, and most of what's north and west of the mighty Mac will be forested. There may not be mountain vistas, but there will be plenty of water and at least you won't fill like you're walking through endless rocks and desert hoping to die before the buzzards take you alive.
Finally, if the world is a better place with more people who understand /out/, why not put some of it near where anyone lives?
