Whelp it depends on where you're coming from, but either way you gotta drive in.

I would recommend going in early May right when the park opens - the place will be dead, cabins/hotel rooms will be readily available without reservation and they'll be super cheap. The only downside is that some of the park roads may not be open depending on how bad the winter was that year (when I did this almost the entire southern half the park was under snow still). Either way easily the best time to go if you don't want to feel like you're in Epcot the whole time.

And fuck yes it is, it's t'riffic!

There are many hot pools like that actually, maybe that one is particularly photogenic or osmething. There's one that's so big and steamy you can't see all the way to the other side really (pic related).

The blue I guess is from minerals, the bright colours are 'orrible bacterial tendrils of legionnaires' disease and other nasties.

Also I think that's the famous pool where 24yr old David Allen Kirwan chased a dog named Moosie into the water. Google it... they both died.

Yep it is, I didn't camp (stayed at Mammoth Lodge) but I don't know all the specifics about how and where. I remember reading that if you go into the Yellowstone backcountry there are very specific rules about camping, and they pretty much tell you that you're likely to die for one reason or another if you do.

You'll have to find the different camping options on their website (which, sadly, I've noticed is kind of a mess and difficult to navigate).

Hopefully another anon sees the thread who knows more about camping there

Did it a few years ago on a rally up that direction. Got up there late one evening, rode through the park the next day, stayed that night and headed out the following morning.

It was cool to see once, but I couldn't imagine going there for more than two days unless there's something that really interests you.

All the cool shit's pretty spread out, so it's not like you can hike from point-to-point and see a bunch of stuff in a day or two. You go through the main gate, drive to some attraction, get out, walk around, take pictures, see some shit, then wander back to your car (bike) and drive (ride) another half hour or so to the next station.

There's traffic jams at every. fucking. animal. on the side of the road. Mangy 'yote? Everyone stops. Another buffalo? Everyone stops. Rabbit? Everyone stops. Minivan full of birdwatchers in front of you sees a butter-crested waffle-winged yellowstonicus birdicus in the meadow two miles away? They'll slam on their brakes to get a picture of it.

So make yourself comfortable, you're spending a lot of time in the park doing 45m/h on a two-lane road. At least on a moto you can easily pass the RVs and harley gangs (rolling roadblocks).

This is why I suggest going right at the beginning of the season. The only people around were at the lodge and park entrance. My second day I spent entirely in my car driving through the west half of the park, and for the 6-7 hours I was out I saw ONE other person and it was a park ranger driving the other direction.

As far as camping goes ... That summer is the only time i've been there in the summer, but I go up there at least once every winter for a week or so.

North of West Yellowstone is all national forest land. There's FS roads and snowmobile trails all over up there, I have to imagine there's primitive camping areas there without looking too hard.

Coming from the east... Cooke City, and the Beartooth Highway. In the winter, beartooth is shut down, the only way into Cooke is through the park. Cooke's a neat little town, not a whole lot there. You can head up Daisy Pass just east of town, FS roads back there, and I believe there's camping facilities. Big snowmobiling area in the winter.

Firearms ... sure, if that's your thing. Be aware that all the buildings are federal buildings so no carrying in there, but firearms are allowed in the park.

This mama bear with two cubs in tow walked right behind my bike. I could have kicked them.

Right tool for the job. Carrying a firearm doesn't mean you have to use it.
I carry both when i'm /out/. I see a bear about once a month.

Believe this was the paint pots, would have been on the west side of the park.

Bring water, sunscreen, food/snacks (be bear-aware), more water, camera, batteries, memory cards, basic first-aid kit... usual /out/stuff.

On the road you're not far from help should something happen. If you start hiking around innawoods you'll want to be self-sufficient as help may not be as quick. Minimal phone coverage in the park, a two-way radio is a better tool.

The rangers are knowledgable, but they deal with tourists all summer long. Don't be "that guy".

I regret not taking more photos.
