Morels I plucked last May! First time finding edible mushrooms (aside from a spoiled giant puff all), and it was entirely serendipitous. Definitely going back to that spot next spring.

I have a question about spawn if anyone is knowledgeable. I recently bought plug spawn and I was thinking about splitting the spawn and inoculating a log and a few growbags. Could I use plug spawn to inoculate supplemented hardwood grow bags or would I have to actually buy grain or sawdust spawn? Would I need to break several plugs apart to evenly distribute through the grow bag?

What techniques do you guys use while searching for edible mushrooms other than just looking down and scouring the forest floor? I’ve been doing a fair bit of research on which mushrooms grow under or on certain trees and being able to identify trees based on bark, leafs ect..

I've run into chickens only once ever growing in the middle of a surburban trail, and I guess I can count myself lucky cityfolk don't know how to ID wild edibles

That's all there is to it.
Obviously knowing which mushrooms grow in certain areas helps, but there is no magic trick.

Only solid advice I can give is that both porcini and gypsy mushrooms (delicious) both seem to like moss-rich conifer forests, and more specifically clearings.

You definitely want to have as many points of contact in the medium as possible, so breaking several plugs up and then mixing them into the bag would be ideal. As far as hardwood chips versus sawdust that depends on your species.

I usually find chickens on trail sides growing out of dead logs. >>1601939 was growing on pine. With chickens it's not hard to spot them through the woods because of their color. Whether I go off trail or not depends upon how easy it is to traverse the forest floor. Usually I can cover more ground following a trail and scanning the woods on either side.

I found mine >>1601226 by chance on one of my normal hikes, I always keep my eyes open and try to be as observant as possible. Found more on that same hike in a completely different spot, just good luck I suppose.

Not that DE anon but I occasionally hit up the PA side in trout season. How do you forage for stuff there? Bushwhacking or just along the normal trails?

The PA side really only has a couple trails, maybe I oughta head a bit further downstream next time

Yeah, never had a situation like that before. It's been dry, there was no wind, and then the ground starts moving and I jumped into a dry creekbed about 4 foot from where the thing landed. Discounting the almost getting killed 5 miles off the road while no one knows where I'm at part it really was an awesome thing. Like the whole thing was in slow motion until all of the sudden it went faster than shit, and my god the noise, it definitely does make a sound.

Supposedly, you can get intoxicated on the yellow ones just like the red ones. I've never been bold enough to try. If you do, do your research and make sure you prepare it properly so you don't cause unnecessary liver damage. What are some common boletus bicolor lookalikes? I've been finding some after rains in my yard, pretty far away from an oak(?) tree. They look very similar in coloration, but have caps that open up into planes with age and bruise blue pretty much instantly. The margin is also very open and there's no connection to the stipe in the main yard specimen. This could be two different species.

I usually only find one or two in the main area but I just found a secondary area where there are many, some growing out of the same stem base in clusters of 2 or 3. Southeastern Louisiana for reference.

Have narrowed it down to Boletus campestris/harrisoni or Hortiboletus rubellus/fraternus, none of which are poisonous (I ruled out Boletus sensibilis). Going to try cooking one or two and see if I shit and/or puke my guts out.

Absolute noob here.

I am thinking to start growing turkey tail in future. It is super useful mushroom and god knows that I need some income. So, yesterday I went to nearby mini forest with my dog and found something that could be very new or failing/dried out turkey tail? Is it?

And how long would it take for that to grow fully so I could pick it up and cultivate it at home (without any conditions, just for practice first and when I learn more I will invest some money).

Thanks. It doesn't seem to really bruise any color and after looking a bit I decided I was sure and ate some with thyme and butter it's pretty good. Very rewarding to go out into the woods with a mushroom in mind and be able to harvest several pounds of it.

Found two species growing near eachother near my house, growing on some unidentifiable buried old stump. Flatter one was growing in the grass next to the stump by itself, other one was growing right on the stump in the dirt in a small, tight cluster of ~3, this was the largest one. Any clue what they are? Flat one has brownish-pink gills, not attached to the smooth white stem. Other one has scales, with deep white gills, also not attached to the stem. Stem has a pink fixed ring. Neither had any particular smell, other than generic mushroom smell.

Doing a spore print now, will post when done. I love in the Northeast US. I think flat one might be a fawn mushroom? I checked my reference book and couldn't find anything like the one on the right.

Spore prints. One on the top is pretty clearly a brownish pink. Given that, as well as the other information I've found, I think I can pretty confidently ID it as a fawn mushroom, pluteus cervinus.

As for the other one, I'm not sure. Can't see it in the picture, but there's a feint white print on the paper upon close examination. Another observation is that locations of bruising on the cap, as well as where I cut the stem have swollen and become very dark brown. Looking over my book, I see two potential IDs: american lepiota (leucoagaricus americanus), or amanita rubescens, but it doesn't quite match either exactly from what I can see.

Saw a bunch of these for the first time while camping in northeast PA. There were loads of them growing in this one patch. Mine were pure ghost white, unlike those pictured. Couldn't figure out what they were until I got home. I had many disagreements with my girlfriend over whether it was a plant or a fungus.

Really cool plant though. It's a parasitic plant that feeds off of subterranean fungus, which in turn feeds on trees. Fuckin nuts. A nice example of convergent evolution, though. It shares so many similarities with mushrooms because it's lifestyle is quite similar to one.

From the same area, a contingent of stump puffballs that were separated from a much larger clump. Was gonna harvest them for grub, but I'm not familiar with them and even though the insides were free from spores I decided not to risk it. Can't wait for next year!

In a forest, they're taking their nutrients from live trees, dead wood (logs), dead leaves, mulch, etc. and less so from the soil itself.

Again there are exceptions, but soil/grass mushrooms are generally not edible, not choice, and tend to be (to varying extents) toxic to humans. Maybe because they're out in the "open" grassland and obvious to possible nibblers they've developed more toxicity as defence. I dunno. Just how it is.

Any idea what this is?

Northern German deciduous forest. Actually from last year, but remember I never ID'ed it. Wife's dad is an avid mushroom hunter, but he didn't know off the top of his head. (I'm not a Germanfag, so not that familiar with local fungi)

Another I am curious about. Also from last year. Something had a nibble at it, but it was otherwise quite large, 8-9 inches tall stem. In the same deciduous forest as above. (Mostly oaks, beeches, birches, some ash)

Of the top of my head... Marasmius oreades, Coprinus comatus, Macrolepiota rachodes, Agaricus arvensis, A. bitorquis, A. canoestrusm other Agaricus spp., Psathyrella candolleana, Calvatia booniana, C. gigantea, Bovista spp., Coprinus atramentarius...

For n00bs, avoiding grass-growing mushrooms is a good way of not puking up dinner for 5 hours, or of just not dying. UNTIL, that is, you know what you're doing and can ID mushrooms with confidence.

a great rule of thumb is - if you are not absolutely sure - dont eat it
that being said my opinion is as good as any other, but they do look like lepiota
gills, stem, ring and cap matches but again - if you are not absolutely sure don't eat it

also it depends where you found the mushroom
sometimes their cap scales/warts get "scratched" off by tall grass, wind, rain, etc.
