Anyonr else here just fucking hate southern californias native landscape? Its so hideous and depressing even extreme deserts are better.

The brush is always short
Tempuratures are always too high
Most plants have spikes that get deep into your skin and attach
Theres literally no shade anywhere because its nothing but bushes.
Rattlesnakes everywhere. The Chapparal biome is definitely the least livable biome in my opinion plus its infested with humans the worst of all animals

I wouldn't know, I came down the coastal highway into northern California and made a hard left over Lassen into NV because I knew southern California would be ahead and it hasn't been gassed yet.

I actually like it a lot. There’s something comforting about the monotony of the low texture rolling hills. Btw it’s not desolate year round, it turns into a lush wonderland for a few months and that’s really neat too.

on a side note, does anyone have any idea what the fuck these trees are and what kind of weather effect explains their abundance? this particular mountain actually borders the ocean whereas my previous brown hill posts are part of a range which comes after the valley (further from the ocean) so my only assumption is these trees are somehow able to extract moisture from the air to grow in an otherwise completely barren environment

This picture demonstrates the difference really well. You can see in the distance (not even that far away, perhaps 5-10 miles) how the mountain range bordering the ocean gets a ton of growth but nothing grows beyond it.

Never been there, but I went to similar biomes and I think it looks cool. It's typical Mediterranean vegetation. There are some very fragant herbs and bushes. There's a charm to the rocky, rough bushland hills and the semi-arid climate

m8, unless you specifically go looking for it there's essentially no "native landscape" left . Even what hasn't been paved or cleared was grazed to death by cattle a century ago (and perhaps even ongoing) while whatever trees that existed were taken for lumber and firewood and what areas remained relatively unmolested have probably been burned far too often in the last half-century.

I got spoiled living in Sacramento so long that I'm frustrated living in San Diego now. There's plenty of wilderness for sure, but it's all hot and dry chaparral. Is there anywhere in the Cleveland National Forest that fits the more traditional /out/ experience, or do I have to drive all the way up to Inyo?

marine layer, not smog. ps smog has virtually nothing to do with pollution from people. any high pressure region with mountains will result in the air being densely packed and therefore smog.
