I was targeting bluegill on a lake with my ultralight setup and caught a few yellow perch unexpectedly. They are indeed a ton of fun and put up a good fight.
Plus they're great to eat as well.

We don't get to ice fish here in SE Virginia so I guess I'm stuck with saltwater. Freshwater fishing wasn't happening last year when it got cold but I've got some new ideas about how to make something happen on that front as well.

I haven't gone fishing since I was a little kid and my father recently gave me this cheap old Abu Garcia. Don't have any lures yet though. It'd be fun to try it out again so I'm wondering: how to prepare best? Do the markings on the rod contain anything important?

I'll mostly be fishing small-medium size freshwater fish (perch, pike etc). So far I'm thinking I'll buy new line (0.17mm?), small soft plastic lures and some hooks (sizes 8-4?). Any ideas?

Get fresh line for sure, and don’t go with the cheapest crap because it makes a huge differencw. Monofilament line goes to hell after a couple years and it will be like a slinky if it has been sitting on that reel for years. I don’t know how it works in Yurop, but I would say maybe 6lb (3kg?) test line for that type of fishing.

Go to a local bait & tackle shop. If you’re going to use lures, get stuff that is easy to use. Inline spinners like Mepps and Rooster Tails are great beginner lures, 1/8oz to 1/4oz. Curly tail grubs on some jigheads are super easy to bounce around as well. And maybe a crank bait, something like an Original Floating Rapala, anything more complex will likely get snagged on a log real quick if you’re trying new spots and don’t know how to use the lure.

Are circle hooks just a meme ? I am unable to find any smaller sized hooks just big aught sized for tourney salt water fishing...I found a few smaller ones but they are offset which are from my understanding barely any safer for catch and release than a normal J hook.

I believe those gama are offset. I think the smallest inline they currently sell are #6. I was looking for some small stuff in the #12-#8 range for the little guys in the local freshwater holes but I guess I will just run some traditional hooks instead.

it's 30 pound braid, a 10 ounce pyramid sinker, and 4 of these things hanging off dropper loops, baited with whatever would stay on the hook well. unfortunatley, shortly after my Abu Garcia Ambassadeur's drag shit out on me. i kinda forgot about fishing it desu i mostly just steal the braid for it for tying flies, and i have a different round baitcaster that i know nothing about that serves the purpose perfectly. i basically just dropped the thing down between peir pilings and tied it down, then forgot about it while i waited on my pin rig. if i saw it bouncing, i knew i had bait.i once had something eat the baitfish on the hook, straightened out the hook pretty quickly.

looks like the braid is packed tight enough. i never fish more than a rod length of leader on spin/baitcast gear. any leader on the spool (even heavy tackle) is not ideal imho

I'm not sure if it affects the "bite" per say, but it does influence where the fish are. Although that may be more of a side effect of the weather or temperature with a pressure change.

I live near a lot of people and didn't want to break a window so i just tied a swivel on and tried it out, it seems to work ok

That'll stick a catfish as long as it's not completely dull, but it's not self-setting and kind of small and you'll have to really pay attention to what's going on with your bait to avoid gut-hooking.

Best thing for catfish are 4/0 and bigger circle hooks.

Lads I'm going offshore fishing for like 3 days in a couple weeks, going about 100+ miles out for primarily yellowfin, wahoo/kings/marlin, and some bottom fishing for AJs.
It's like a party-boat style trip, but not really. Basically 10 (random) guys divide the cost of the trip and we all go. So it's about $10k divided among 10 of us.
Anyways, is it sorta stupid or weird to be paranoid that I'm gonna be literally hours for any type of civilization with like 15 random people (captain and deckhands included) that I've never met before? I'm so looking forward to it and hopefully have tons of fun, but this is just something that crossed my mind today.

If it's for back country trout or some other fish that realistically aren't going to be over 3 or 4 pounds get a cheap 4-5 piece with a carrying case/tube and it'll work great and probably handle bigger fish ok. Don't go telescopic they suck.

I don’t know how to feel about today. Everyone on shore were hooking 3-4in trout, one guy even hooked a native 3incher. They then proceeded to manhandle the little guys on land as they struggle to get the hooks off and they proceeded to toss the fish into the hand deep shallow water with rocks everywhere. There was literally a few dead small rainbows just lying under the water near the shore. I thought trout required a more gentle touch if you do catch and release?

There’s a salmon run going on and I was just introduced to drift elbow-to-elbow fishing.
I don’t think that’s for me. I can see it being very enjoyable with a bunch of people you know, but I would rather just hike in somewhere, risk encountering a bear, and fish salmon alone.

Very familiar with this way of “fishing” if you can even call it that. It’s owned by this faggot politician that literally no one in the area likes because he’s such a dickhead. They charge ~$90 per day to fish their stretch of water. Thing is you’re legally allowed to navigate these waters when ever you want, just can’t have fishing gear with you. I’ve always wanted to take my boat and just start doing laps up and down the river snagging everyone’s line and spooking all the pods.

I'm testing some 6# now by keeping it in the car. I did the same thing with stren and eagle claw, and found the eagle claw became less flexible and turned white.

I wish I'd kept the zebco in the car too on a reel during the season. so far all i've learned is that stren holds up great even in a hot car in the sun all year.

I use 11lb Flouro with a 20lb leader. This is in Weedbeds that are like 10' tall.

After looking at there website they actually provide a lot, and anglers are still required to purchase fishing licenses, so its not like they are piggy backing money away from the state.

I don’t disagree that they provide a unique way to fish the river that gets you away from all the ass hats in then public pools but at the end of the day they are inclredidly greedy and constantly show their lack of interest in doing anything that benefits the town or industry.

Was fishing rainbow trout at a stocked lake once. Had a spinning rod with a worm and bobber setup propped up on the ground and was casting my fly rod off to the side.
Didn't catch a single trout all day while the old retiree next to me caught his limit of 3 fish within two hours of throwing an inline spinner.

All of these brook trout came from a tiny stream (10 feet across). I don’t know if what you were fishing was all just flat slow moving water or pocket water but you’d be surprised how well those suckers blend in.

If in the right hands flies will always outproduce on small water. Much better presentation, way wider selection to choose from and if there is a hatch you can match the naturals and slay.

Inline spinner is basically limiting yourself to streamers in a handful of colors . If they aren’t chasing streams you won’t catch anything

I was fishing with a crankbait, specifically an X-rap that's 1 1/2 inches long not counting the hooks. The Onion, from the waterfall to Lake Superior, anyways, is pools and riffles, but the pools are generally less that 10 feet across and I can hop across the stream in the riffles.

I spent more time negotiating the banks than fishing, and I didn't really fish the riffles, just the pools.

Rainbows absolutely love spinners. They seem to prefer spinners to flies on most days. I've had the best luck with white or black rooster tails and silver/gold phoebe's. Browns I've had more luck with flies than rainbows but unless there is an active hatch or it's really cold spinners tend to out fish flies 3/5 days

I wouldn't call myself an expert but I've been doing it for about ten years now. I will say A.) If you're going for quality/native fish, flies always will take the cake, but for numbers of 9-12" stockers a spinner will usually outperform because they are so dumb and think anything that moves is food and B.) The water makes a huge difference. There are rivers that I have only caught a handful of trout on spinners, and I always have success on flies, but there are also places where spinners outperform flies nearly consistently. I guess you can target the same fish with streamers but that never can get a reaction strike like a spinner can.
I mostly fly fish because it's fun, especially dry fly takes. I always bring both a fly rod and a spinning rod with me
