Same, as far as needing maps goes. Anything beyond the green spots I simply use my eyes and camp wherever.

Freecampsites is more for boondocking/roadtripping than backcountry stuff. So if you're pulling off to sleep for a night you can look up which nearby spots are good and which are noisy trash dumps.

You could use your eyes and ears for that, but it requires years of practicing (I've personally been practicing since I was a baby)
