I'm not who you were replying to, but I find I'm fine in my street clothes and two polyester blankets down to 0'F
between 0 and -10 F I need 3 blankets. past that, I switch to wool blankets, long underwear, and a long wool coat, then I'm good down to -20. a -30 I need to triple up on wool blankets, keep the coat on (I wear a cheap knit hat below 30 but switch to a rabbit ushanka below 0) and maybe light a candle if it's windy out (this is all in an uninsulated tent btw
I've never camped below -30 but I imagine I could get by -40 to -50 with the long underwear, 4 wool blankets, the ushanka, the wool coat, and an extra layer of cotton sweatwear between the long underwear and the outerwear (typically a flannel shirt and khaki cargos)
also, wool socks below zero, over regular cotton socks. no compromise. footwear doesn't matter, I don't sleep with boots/shoes on, no matter what. I'd double up on the wool socks if I had to.
