Haix all the way, with Lowa the best alternative. 98% of boots on the market nowadays are outsourced chinkshit that takes a couple heavy soaks to fall apart. It's much better to splurge once on boots that will last you at least 5 years and then can be resoled and repaired to last you another five.

So true. $400 over the course of the boots life is not very expensive. There are some well made boots out there- handmade- even custom etc... They aint cheap but they last a long time.

Outdoors store retail pleb here, I have 60% off Salomon. I owned some X ultra Mid gtx boots and beat the hell out of them. Now I've worn out my X ultra 3 shoes. Can anyone recommend the Quest 4D 3 gtx and do you think they'd be warm/waterproof enough for winter hiking? I'm considering continuing on the trail shoe route for my daily/hiking needs and buying some dedicated insulated winter boots. I live in the south central US, Ozark region.

Fun story - I had worn a hole in my old hiking boots and needed a new pair. I was in REI looking at these $300 zamberlans (I think the most expensive boots they had in the store) and chatting up the salesman.

I was talking about how I was just a casual backpacker, nothing serious, but I liked the look of these boots. The salesman, this 60+ guy who had clearly been around the block (or the AT) a few times was like

> look bud, you could buy these shoes, and they would work for you, but using these as a casual hiker would crush their spirit
> it would be like buying a $10,000 tour de france bike and using it in the 5 boro bike tour

He then talked me down to some <$200 solomons which have worked nicely for me. Quality is not as good but they fit a lot better than the zamberlans did.

Mad respect for that guy - not trying to upsell me on shit I don't need and comfortable telling me when I'm spending outside what I can reasonably take advantage of.

Also, apparently the zams take like 50+ miles to break in, which would have been a massive pain in the ass. Solomons were gtg in like 5-10 miles.

Best cheap but solid boots are milsurps desu. Get yourself some beat up modern military stuff, put some inserts in there and buy quality socks and you're gucci. Personally I use my standard issue warm weathers for everything requiring boots and I have not been let down since I have broken them in.

Yeah I went and got like $180 Oboz cause they fit my foot perfectly for my work boots. They are pretty light compared to my previous boots like red wings and what not. But the fit is what matters, either a shoe fits your foot or doesn't. Move on. Don't try buy it because breaking it in won't magically make it a perfect for for you. Though I am getting some Zamberlans for my hiking boots only. Might be a bit over kill but that's what I want. Though I'm surprised he didn't recommend trail runners so he might be old schooled. But he gave you the right idea to not get them. Fit matters so much more.

Well the Salmon speedcross I had where pretty good, they're on gen 5 now, I think mine were gen 3? I can't speak for the other trail runners they sell but they've got a huge variety.

Garbage. Despite being canvas, they are extremely stiff and rough. Take forever to break in, and even afterwards they cannot compete with run-of-the-mill hiking shoes comfort-wise. Not breathable, either; your feet sweat like a nigger in a courtroom, the boots absorb it because lolcanvas, and then reek to high heaven even after washing. Soles are hard and inflexible, which works murder on your ankles and knees. Heavy when soaked, take long to dry. Honestly, I fail to see a use for them nowadays. They were made for marches through desert to prevent feet from getting roasted by scorching hot sand when few alternatives were available, and legionnaires still preferred sandals.
If you need summer boots that you can wear every day and hike in, consider investing into a pair of veldskoens with a lug sole. They are super light, conform to the shape of your feet and are almost indestructible. Just make sure to buy genuine South African stuff - chink faux leather imitations fall apart within weeks.

Quite a bit of interesting info in here. Recently became a 20 hours a week and I’m set fag, looking for some outdoor hobbies to pursue as I live in Kentucky and there seems to be ample opportunities. Content wise, my boomer father recently sent me these shoes that he bought and didn’t like. Seem to fit fine and are comfortable enough, minus looking like shit. Brand is Aero/Vibram. I got these Brandit boots from Military 1st website. Cheap chink shit, light (enough), good (enough) penetration resistance, decent wearing sole, grippy. Starting to show signs of wear after 12 months hard larping, eyelets starting to elongate their holes (looks like they'll pull out sometime soon), leather uppers getting real soft and plush, overall these boots are getting comfier with age. Under $100AU, got my money's worth.

After wearing the KSK3000 for about two years (had to resell them because they turned out to be a bit small), I got myself the Tibets a couple months ago, pretty much a somewhat taller version of the former.
Despite the height and weight (33.5cm, 2.3kg) they're super comfy - I bearly notice them, minimal sweating and nothing feels in the way. Only did some breaking in so far (wearing around the house, gardening, light day hikes) but planning to do another Alpine hike next year, went well in the KSK3000 2 years ago aside from the slightly numb toes from them being too small

eh, boots are wear items. break-in is a cost in its in own right, albeit usually a non-monetary one, and resoles and rebuilds ain't cheap (and generally change the fit of the boot a bit).

of course, it depends some on your intended use, but in general I think the "muh whites lasted a gorillion seasons so akshully I save money" types aren't putting a whole lot of wear and tear on their gear anyway.

Lowas are pretty decent. I bought these Lowa Tibets this past summer and loved how comfortable and light they were, but when the rains started recently I've discovered that they leak like a sieve (shitty for $400 boots). My corked Meindls are by far the most bulletproof boots I've ever owned though.

Good the heavy insulated ones are pretty warm, so I'd only suggest them if you do a lot of winter walking. Though it depends on how fast your feet get cold as well. Overall experience is good with them though. If you go to a redwing store they'll clean and oil them and give you new laces for free for life. Also a lifetime warranty on the soles of the boot. The leather though does get scuffed fairly quick, I'm fine with that as I think it adds character to them, though I know some people are anal over boot scuffs. I'd hold off till black friday. They usually will have them $50 off. That is when I got my 2nd pair last year.

The company that resoles them with calks is called Hoffman Boots, out of Idaho. I don't know the actual boot model but Hoffmans just calls them 10" Meindl Loggers. They can be bought calked or with vibrams soles.

If toe box is lacking get work boots with composite toe or steel toe boot as well.
There is no do it all boot.

These boots are actually really really good for the price, definitely surprised me for chinkshit. Make sure you get the W(wide) size, as the normal has a very narrow toebox. Yesterday I tried on the Berghaus Hillwalker and Hillmasters GTX II

And I also tried the Scarpa Terra GTX and Cyrus mid GTX.

All seemed reasonably comfortable and reasonably well made, but I guess I don't know what the fuck I'm on about because I've never owned or bought a pair of walking boots before.

I did a 10 mile hike in steel toed keens recently, they were perfect. Pretty steep incline and decline (was a looped trail up and down another side of the mountain). Lots of rocks and tricky spots. It wasn't even my better pair with a higher ankle. I guess some people don't like keens but I don't know why. Maybe they have delicate girly toes? The only disadvantage is maybe

Get a good pair of insulated, waterproof hiking boots and you'll be fine in the snow. I'd also recommend a higher cut (6-8"). Depending on how much snow you guys get, if it's a couple feet at a time, get snow shoes. You could go throughout the thread and check out the different brands. I'd say just go to your local REI or Bass and try on some stuff, look specifically at winter hiking boots, see what you like.

I currently have a pair of Skechers shoes that have the inside heel worn down to the plastic as well as holes in the memory foam worn in where the balls of my feet are as well as my big toes, probably because of how my feet stick outward and I put weight the most in those areas.
I'm just afraid that the same thing could possibly happen if I were to get a more expensive shoe/boot, unless the soles can be replaced and possibly the inside heel repaired if that were to happen.
Danner's has repairing services though, so that probably shouldn't be too much of an issue if it does happen.

I'm in thr german army and i was issued Haix boots so far,, a heavy version and a summer version.
Love em both, sturdy as rock regarding the heavy version, good on my feetx comfortable.
The summer version breathes well and is also fairly sturdy.

But yeah i get you Frenchanonx because before that i was issued that old Kampfstiefel 2000 and those were awful apart from the looks.

I did conscription back in 2006 and I remember the break-in period in the first couple weeks being a little rough (I was not used to wearing such kind of shoes before and neither to marching/much hiking in general before), heels got a bit irritated but no blisters let alone open wounds. Then they actually became super comfy.
Wore the shit out of them afterwards, granted not daily, but a lot around the garden, walking the doggos etc. Lasted about 10 more years that way before the inner leather got totally fucked up

I mist admit, with proper soles they would probably still be decent but eh, in general they suck a bit too much.
I've seen a few guys who's boots just fell apart in the field.
They wear out really fast, can't be resoled (well that ain't an issue because you can just exchange them for new ones) and they hurt more than my newer ones in their breaking in period.

Butni suppose even that is still better than what frenchanon described, i actually heard that from a few french military guys by now, that their issued boots are absolute dogshit.

i disagree that it's mandatory for all people. as long as there's no significant snow remaining i wear trailrunners or approach shoes for my offtrail sierra trips. that being said, i understand that people with some ankle instability (such as my wife) feel much more comfortable in higher boots.

I have a pair, the wool is a shock absorber for your feet. The original black version is better, since it's lighter than the white v2 pair. i've had people jump on my toes, and i feel nothing. Just make sure to get silicone oil wipes, or the rubber's gonna degrade real fast. Oh and also a spare boot insole.

jobsite requires steel toe or youre not allowed on it, but my old man seen a guy have weight dropped on his and the steel toe itself bent down and cut into the guys foot, lost his toes and so he refuses to wear them

Yeah, also recently happened to someone from the town, dude had 25 tons dropped on them, toes were all mud and had to be removed. Steel toes only protect up to about maybe 100-ish kg. But above that, even if he hadn't worn them, the results would've been very similar

steel toes will protect you to like 200kg ish max (which is extremely good), but after that the question is would you like your toes cut off straight or smushed to fucking shit and THEN cut off by doctors

really steel toes all the way, they saved my coworkers feet once when a fast spinning cutter kicked the boot away when it hit the metal toe instead of cutting into it

I picked up a pair of Salomon X Ultra Mid 2 CS waterproof winter boots yesterday and wow, I've never worn anything that comfy on my feet in maybe 15–20 years. I managed to get a good discount on them somehow too.

What just appeared in my boots? I wore them on some wet days last week then stuffed them with printer paper over the weekend to help them dry, when I pulled it out this morning this stuff was there. It kind of looks like mold but has no smell/texture and is only in that spot, hoping there's something I can do to get rid of it without ruining the boot (not sure if it matters that they're all leather). Limmers rock btw if you don't mind paying and can wear them gingerly for a few months while they break in.

Get something from Bennon. Any of their boots are top-tier in sub $60 price range. Not sure if they ship outside of Czech Republic tho. I got pic related in Prague couple of years ago and it was money well spent.

There are pros and cons to both.

You are more likely to injure the foot itself with minimal shoes (either from strains or contact injuries if there isn't enough padding), on the other hand minimal shoes are much more stable and you are less likely to roll/twist an ankle, and less likely to have fit problems like hammertoe/etc and because they are softer and flex more you are less likely to have bad blister spots. The risks that exist for both types can be avoided if you are reasonably careful.

Personally I prefer minimal shoes for mild/hot weather, but in winter they are simply too cold so I am forced to switch to boots.

I have backpacked hundreds of miles in minimal shoes, leather boots, and big mountaineering boots and nothing is universally better than anything else.

I don't speak from much experience but I did a 2-day hike in the High Peaks Wilderness (i.e. constant rock hopping and watching every step) with pic related and felt much better than the portions of the trail I did in boots. They don't have any support or cushioning so not advisable if you're carrying a large pack or doing anything in cold/wet weather, but you get more control over your step and the benefits of a light shoe. Also only ~$20 so it's not a tragedy if they don't work for you

I would do plenty of training if using a minimalist with heavier pack, or just use boots for the cushioning slow death of your lower body.
If you're new to minimalist footwear, you need to use your foot/leg muscles, which can take time from a boot which prevents most foot movement.
A lot of the argument comes from the boot doing its job: stability, insulation, traction, to minimalism developing your body to do most these jobs. Native Americans were able to maintain warm feet through good blood flow in using the muscles farthest away from their hearts. A good number of special forces switched to trail runners.
Not that most trail running shoes are very durable since they tend to use the shittier EVA foam.

Laugh at anyone recommending Danner's since they were bought out by a fashion company, and charge ridiculous prices. Notoriously thin leather. Same company bought out Whites in 2014, so go with Nicks instead.

Another guy with M77 boots. Three pairs of those: one starting to wear out, one starting to wear in, and one brand new, because they're cheap as chips over here - if you're lucky.

They can be that good, if you size correctly (oversized as hell, my 44 foot takes size 43 out of the box), wear woollen socks and are willing to play around with insoles/socks.

The ones I have had for ~4 years have stretched out, take in an insole made for size 45 (being labelled 43) with extra support and cushion, thick woollen socks, and still feel pretty comfy and spacy. Heck, they should still have some extra space with two pairs of socks.

There's no membrane, no fabric (outside of that strip on the tongue), not a whole lot to fuck up. Maintenance is straightforward.
