What is a good medium action spinning rod to get, preferably under 50 bucks that I can use for general fishing as well as give to the lady when we fish together. I dont have much in between my UL and my MH casting rod. I'll probably pop a Shimano Sierra on it

Also, any recommendations for a steelhead float rod? I'm torn between getting a spinning rod or just diving in the whole centerpin game. I know it's not a common technique outside of a few local spots but any advice would be nice I'm thinking 10'6" either way I go.

I needed a 2 price medium for camping and just bought a Shimano Sojourn. I'm very happy with it, it is at least as good as some of the rods I paid $50 for and it was $20. I put a Catana 2500 FD (the mostly black new one) on it and I strongly recommend that reel too. Definitely worth the $10 price bump from the Sierra.

Why are actual bait stores so rare?

Most places only carry worms, dead shad, and maybe some dead shrimp, and entire rows of powerbait.

Its cheaper too.

I go to a reptile store, and I have a selection of like 40 different live baits. In good condition, and for much less than a sportsmans store.

I'm thinking about culturing my own Mealworms, and Nightcrawlers, but I live in an apartment, so I have to get some more info about smell, and the ability of the critters to survive outside of the culture medium assuming something stupid happens.

if you're torn between centerpin and spinning rod, go spinning rod. if you are willing to spend centerpin money to learn a new way to fish, learn to swing streamers on a 2 handed rod, you can set a good two hand combo up for steelhead for about the cost of a centerpin setup, and casting a skagit head is a lot more fun than dead drifting with a centerpin. realistically, expect to spend 250-300 for a centerpin or spey/switch rod, then another $100 on a reel. if you want my advice

Great lakes, I've got an 8 wt and I dont think I really want to do much more with a fly rod then that because I have done my share of streamer swinging and I've never really had much luck with it aside from an Atlantic salmon that I caught and later learned they're incredibly rare.
My big decision is to either get a 10'6" spinning rod with a spinning reel, learn how to float fish right, and later in life when I start making money finally get a centerpin, or just cut my teeth with the pin now and always have that. My problem isnt so much the money I can afford it, it's just that I'm worried about the learning curve. I'm in medifag school and the bulk of the steelhead season I'm gonna be incredibly busy and fish maybe twice a month for a few hours. I dont want those few hours to be spent dealing with line twist and backlash and not catching fish. I'd be fine with learning it any other time but I'm in a unique situation where practice isnt realistic .

Ive caught more fish swinging than any other way regarding great lakes steelhead, but if drifting egg sacks or jigs is what you wanna do, just get a spinning rod. I have a fenwick salmon/steelhead rod that i like if you want a reccomendation. Fenwicks tend to be slower than marked which is good for steelhead

I'm not a big fan of swinging streamers because you never end up in the strike zone as long or accurately as you should, and if they're gonna take a swinging streamer I can probably get them with a little rooster tail on a spinning rod, and I can be deadly accurate with a spinning rod, instead of false casting/tossing a big scary thick line across the fish I can toss it exactly where I want in a second. Now fly fishing has it's place because nothing is better for delivering tiny nymphs and whatever else small they're eating though

Catching bass is more about knowing where the bass are and when they're hungry. Proper gear, proper technique, etc just widen the margins or let you narrow in on specific bass.

If I were just starting out, I'd buy an entry level medium or medium heavy spinning rod (I'm partial to the Shimano Sojourn when talking about a cheap rod that performs well), a decent 2500 or 3000 series spinning reel (I like the Catana FD, but there are other good ones), some 15 lb braided line (Sufix or PowerPro), some 12 lb floro or mono for leader material (so you can more easily tie different lures on and such, braid can kinda be a bitch, especially when it comes to working through split ring line ties) and do inline spinners, wacky rigged senkos, and lipless crank baits (Ripping Rap, etc).

Brought the glass 2wt down to harass some browns after class. couldn’t get them to eat any of my flies until I tied a small size 20 Adams on and switched to 7x tippet. Only then did they decide it was convincing enough to eat. Felt like such a retard casting for a good 45 minutes switching flies to trying to find something that would work while there were tons of browns eating off the surface all around me. Felt good to finally dial it in.

The fish havent seemed to be turned away by it yet. Years i went after them with spinning gear, i only ever caught one once i started swinging flies.

Indeed, we can agree on that. There are scenarios where a fly rod is supperior. Small nymphs and dry flies come to mind, as well as sightfishing carp. There's not really anything better than an 8 weight fly rod for delivering a bait to a carp in 10 inches of water without spooking it, while still having the backbone to convince the fish that it doesn't actually need to be in a tree.

Will it increase the odds of catching one? Maybe, but it will definitely make catching one a lot more fun

I think I've gone back on forth with you at least twice how we were in the opposite situation where I've fly fished for a couple years and never caught a steelie but switched to spinning and started catching them. What type of streamers do you use? I'm still not very sold on focusing on the fly, but I'm interested in these streamers. If I'm fishing a fast run the streamer ends in the top of the water column.

Adirondacks. Where I caught those browns is about 35 minutes from campus. The bigger rivers are around 40 minute but I have 3-4 really good rivers to chose from. Small brookie streams are everywhere though. This is my last fall up here before I graduate so I’ve been trying to cram in as much fishing as I can. Pic related from last Saturday.

Rate my trout set up

ROD: Daiwa spinmatic 7'6 ultra light casting rod

REEL: Abu Garcia ambassadeur 1500C

LINE: Daiwa j braid 6LB

LEADER: 4lb p-line floroclear

Im a Southern California spic so all i get is stocked trout in the winter.
Its still a while away but I'm eager for it

Even if all the spics and gooks over fish the trout, it's as close as I'll get to any kind of trout

That's probably my problem. I might give it a try, how many have you picked up that way? Also the only flies I've had luck with spawning salmanoids is egg flies, I've only ever really snagged salmon and steelies with streamers.

New to the game and read the pastebin. Going to be shore fishing hopefully for some striped bass. I have an assortment of regular hooks, sinkers and bobbers from a tacklebox I found in the garage. Picked myself some 3/0 worm hooks, 3/16oz worm weights and a few different colors of soft plastic worms. I might try to bet some baitfish when i get there but i don’t know how lucky I’ll get. Should I stick with worms and a bobber or experiment with a little bit of everything as the day progresses?

So the rod I was gonna give my girlfriend to cast for staging salmon broke at the tip (2 guides came off) and I'm away at school, so I can't get any of my other rods atm, I've been planning this trip for a while and I decided to get a rod tip replacement kit with the glue and what not. Do you think that would be fine for using for a day casting 1/2 oz. lures?

I could also get a cheap Berkley lightning rod at Walmart tonight but I've been meaning to get a nice spinning rod. I didnt see anything at the local fishing shop I liked so I dont want a Walmart rod to be my rod.
Please give advice

Psh just buy any 8ft medium surf rod or if you're in freshwater an 8ft swimbait rod. Whether I'm visiting my chick in MD and fishing the Chesapeake Bay or am in Oklahoma visiting my folks I catch plenty of striper on those two rods. Cost me $75 and $120 respectively.

I'd probably get the Berkley cuz I find use for even a cheap rod and I'm not comfortable doing rod repairs. Look up some YouTube videos on repairing guides and tips and go from there. You might get a few more years out of that rod.

Float rod a 10 ft 6 light moderate Fenwick is hard to neat at 120.00

I caught almost 100 steelhead floating spawn sacks and beads on a 10 6 light moderate with a shimano stradic 4000 reel last year.

Your water will determine how hard it is to centerpin.
If you have to wallis cast to get out there...or have really fast water....centerpinning is going to take awhile to master.
If on the other hand you have fairly easy drifts to hit...its honestly very easy. It is a deadly way to fish for steelhead. It also turns a lot of otherwise nice fishermen into entitled greedy assholes.

I believe you, I know guys that have gotten 30 a day. What do you drift? Sacs or beads or jigs? Also what do run line wise? I got some thin 8lb flouro I expect to use for leaders. I haven't got the float rod yet but I'm thinking of getting the same fenwick.
I love learning new techniques because I dont want to end up like the old dudes I see who fish with zebcos and live minnows because that's all they know. This year I've learned and I'd say mastered the baitcaster, got pretty good with muskie fishing, and now I'm gonna try to get serious about steelhead. Compared to the same stuff I did last season I've grown considerably as an angler.

I keep a few variations of bucktail and craft fur clousers in my saltwater and bass fly boxes. I just pick them based off what kind of movement I want and where I'm fishing. I tend to stick to smaller craft fur clousers when targeting speckled trout and then use bucktail clousers more for bass.

I actually have an odd interest in European style carp fishing and also carp fly fishing. I live on the Coast so I have arguably better fishing but next time I'm visiting my family in Oklahoma I might buy some boilies and give it a go. Boilies arn't really necessary. Unironically in America a 50lb bag of Feed Corn will cost you about $12.00 and catch you infinitely more carp than boilies. Put the boilies on a hair just like you would a boilie, and microwave the feed corn that you want to float.

Out of the hundreds of people casting the piers for staging salmon, only two fish I saw were caught, and my gf hooked and lost two. I'm proud of her. I caught a bullhead for some reason. I'm fine with not catching one because the guy who did catch one on our side was harrassed by Russians and they ended up taking his fish, and immediately after he caught it a bunch of idiots flocked around him for the rest of the day. I also have sunburn on the right side of my neck but not the left. I wish I got one but I might do it again next week weather depending. Pic unrelated

Oh. Nevermind then. You - you're all right. But that other guy I do not like. I'm in Jacksonville and I found a small lagoon and tarpon are rolling - I've caught a couple. One on a live mullet under a popping cork(I casted out to where they were and let it sit). Another I had hit an S52MR-18 but it threw the hooks. I'm thinking a bigger, more visible lure(I need to be able to cast it further and a bigger lure will cover more ground).

Looks fine, I picked up a set of stocking foot LL Bean emergers for $99 on sale a few months ago but I haven't had a chance to try them out yet. I'd be a little concerned with quickly shedding those boots should they become waterlogged but they look durable and easy to hose off.

I'm out here in the Netherlands and there's fucking water everywhere. You can fish in like 90% of water with a permit, but I'm told to stay away from eating most fish because of their muddy flavor or contamination.

I'm not pulling anything out of canals but small lakes (sand traps) and rivers. I read that I should not eat fatty fish like trout because of heavy metals and PCB, etc. We have trout, pike, perch, eel, catfish (can't eat the eel I think).

What the fuck is going on that I can't fish to eat? It's the most honest way to get food

Our wildlife management offices do heavy metals testing and I’ve read the reports online for my area, I would suggest you do the same for the rivers your fishing in but I would guess you’ll be fine unless you eat fish every day. The bigger problem here here is that the catch and release ethic is so strong that if someone sees you take a trout to keep they will probably at least say something to you and possibly actually harass you over it. I never keep anything over 16” because the big boys are important to spawning and I want someone else to get a chance to catch them but anything under in fair game in my mind.

I was trolling lures in the Gulf this week, and snapped a foot and a half off of my 7.5 foot Calico Jack. I know it's a cheap rod, but I have to budget my gear expenses. I used a rod tip repair kit and trolled it as a shortie. It held up very well. I even had a dolphin try to steal a skipjack, and I fought him all the way to the board. I felt like shit, thinking I hooked him accidentally, but he spit it at the board like, "That was fun! Later chump!"

It was the best fight of the week, and the rod held its own very well.

So I've been pretty set on the Okuma SST 10'6. My big question is to go with a medium or a medium light. People say a little bit more support is needed for mending line well so I'm not sure how it feels. Any suggestions?
I dont fish huge rivers often and my casts aren't gonna be that long, so I think I should be ok with that. I'm gonna put a spinning reel on it and then if I want to dive into the centerpin later on I should be ok tossing a reel on.

I would go medium light, but you have to choose what works best for you, personally. I really like Okuma, and have an Avenger ABF 90, and ABF 50 reel. I fought the dolphin on the ABF 50, and use the 90 mainly for live baiting. They are really great in regards to the oiled felt washers they use for the drag system. You can accidentally dunk the rod, and rinse and regrease when you have a chance without having to sand down the drag washers that get rusty. The baitfeeder switch is amazing for trolling. Paddling around and hearing the reel scream when you get a strike is second only to a massive topwater explosion.

Unless you are brain dead retarded you won’t have an issue. Only way I’ve ever broken rods is from either car doors being shut on the tips or from transporting them in the bed of my truck and something heavy slides around and crushes it. It would have to be a real shit made rod to splinter from light use or a weight tapping against it.

You guys get /out/ today? Packed a thermos of coffee and spent the morning pestering bluegills and dink bass casting a little frog popper fly on my ultralight. I could only get about 15' of distance on a good cast but I was getting at 3-4 strikes per cast with an extremely low hookup ratio.

That's what I thought, I own multiple Loomis rods and I've read countless times, even from Gary Loomis himself, that simply 'bruising the rod' (as in hitting it against something) causes splinters to form inside the blank, which will cause it to fail when you're fighting a big fish. Even if it doesn't look like the rod is damaged, it is.

But then from my anecdotal cases, I'm not careless with my rods, but I don't treat them lightly. Many a time when I'm simply swinging the rod while messing around, I'll forget I have a texas rig or a carolina rig tied on, and the tungsten weight goes flying down the line and smacking the blank in multiple areas.

Never had an issue. Even with NRX rods, which are renowned for being fragile as fuck.

Personally I'm not a fan of 4 piece rods for streams unless the packability is top priority for you.
I'd go with one of the very short Tenryu Rayz native stream or the excellent Spectra if you have the budget for it. Nothing comes close to the Spectra in my opinion.

I’m a retard when it comes to fishing- just going off what friends and neighbors told me.

I spent a year on a lake and eventually got set up with a basic rod/reel and 20 pound test line for catfish (I started with 12 pound but had the line break a few times).

Now that I’m back home and wanted to fuck around with smaller stock fish, do I need to respool all new line or can I just use a lighter weight leader?

They would come up and snap at the fly with a splash but not properly take them in the mouth for me to hook up.

I think I was using a size 10. They were definitely brown trout and atlantic salmon, I could see them clearly in the water and only managed to catch a couple due to luck.

Should I bite the bullet and fall for the DC meme or should I stick to regular baitcasters?

Got a nice bonus from work, want to splerge on myself and either get a Metanium MGL or a Metanium DC. I don't know which. Boomer fishing guides on forums are pretty much split on them both, so that doesn't help either.

I'm leaning towards the MGL because it's a 2016 model compared to the DC which is a 2015 model and because it costs literally $120 less from where I can find them cheapest.

Cheapest bet is to go to sunshine pier in daytona and rend a pole and some bait for 20 bucks for the day and fish the pier. I did it and caught a hammerhead shark a few years back on frozen shrimp

dusk is good. any piers/structure especially with lightrs on art night. im a big fan of the yamashita jigs 2.0-2.5 in green and natural colours. long cast then a few seconds pause then a twitch/wind pause.. theyll usually hit on the drop. the idea is to get the jig down as deep as you can without snagging the bottom, obviously.

Also, as soon as you can see your jig on the retrieve, watch the water around it. squid hunt in pairs/threes and will often zoom in close then hold back at the last second. polarised sunnies are a must. when you see them zoom in twitch your rod tip up and let the jig drop... youll see them zoom in for the kill. once you actually see how they hunt/take the jig the rest will follow pretty easily.

For the most part its through personal experience with a variety of soft plastics. But its also not hard to find general consensus on them thanks to the vast amount of user-generated information on the Internet. Sometimes you just have to look in the right places.

Some people prioritize durability and others prioritize action, some prioritize price. Googan baits have pretty good action but they're far from durable, and the high prices don't make things any better either, let alone the fact that you'd be financially supporting a bunch of obnoxious YouTubers by purchasing them.

there's usually a tradeoff in softness/action and durability. You can minimize the damage caused to a soft plastic using superglue or small zip ties but tearing around the hooks exit point will still occur. Pic is my soft plastic box, I cut out one divider from a trout magnet box so accommodate these little rat tails without storing them bent and took off the label with lighter fluid. incidentally, are the hinges in these boxes lubricated because they tightened up and started squeaking after I used the fluid to break up the sticker.

Lost my second mirrolure to another tarpon. This one might have been a pb(probably between 3-4 ft). I’m using 30 PowerPro braid, but they keep breaking it. This one broke me on the third jump. For a second, I thought I’d be able to get him - we were moving along the bank steady then BOOM and zero weight. What am I doing wrong? I’m kind of new to this. Bro I use that for dinky bass. Tarpon are about the size of muskie maybe a bit bigger and jump more, I'd use 65 lbs minimum probably 80 for braid. Use a mono leader too maybe 30 lbs.

I wish they'd make more of the old Rebel F49 colors for some reason they quit on the holographic and detailed colors and they're harder and harder to find. I find that they swim with a wider wobble and preform better on a slow retrieve than the small xraps and cast significantly better than the balsa minnows.

Look for water that’s a little faster than trout usually hold in. If I’m looking specifically for whitefish I almost always go with a size 12 prince nymph but any basic pattern will do. The trick is to get the nymph all the way to the bottom, I lose a lot of flies trying to hook up with them. Where are you planning on fishing for your trip?

sounds like you need a fly that rides hook point up. i'd honestly probably tie something along the lines of a wirebody soft hackle on a jig hook. it will sink like a stone, hold up well, and snag less. but i have a weird thing for wire bodies

Yes. White bass are fun and fight hard. Anything that imitates baitfish will suffice. Small bucktails, paddletails, etc. I target them with flies. Using a sink tip line and clouser minnows to work deep.

Thanks, bro. I think I'm gonna switch to 50 lb braid and 80 mono. The ones I'm catching aren't 100-200 lb monsters. They're 3-4 ft.(10-30 lb).

Don't superglue it, the knot needs to be able to pull tight and secure itself through friction and superglue entirely removes that aspect.

Where in Florida? How much are you willing to spend? What do you want to catch?
Roughly/generally speaking, if you are going to fish inshore, be prepared to spend at least $500.
Offshore, sorta depends. If you're looking into a very serious sportfishing charter/boat, be prepared to easily drop a minimum of 5 grand or so. For a not so serious trip, maybe a few miles offshore, probably a grand or two.

Quick question:
I picked up some crayfish bait today, i intend on using it for normal fish.
However it was very cheap, 5€ for 1kg and its just made of fish product. The energy content is good and its got lots of fat and protein.

That’s a nice looking fly. I’ve started tying a few patterns on jigs to use for euro style nymphing anyway and they do seem to snag a lot less. Part of the reason I use the prince for whitefish is that I have about a hundred of them and don’t mind losing a few. Is there a name for that pattern? If not I think I copy it reasonably well from the photo.

Diablo paddle sports kayaks are definitely the Kings of the flats. But truly like the other guy said, any sit on top kayak is fine. You can easily modify them to meet your needs. Biggest thing for me is a comfortable seat, nothing worse than 2 hours into fishing and your ass and back make you want to paddle back.
