How do you learn to swim as a 29 year old?

i mean, you're literally taught at school from grade 3 until you finish highschool. even out in the desert.
it's a basic part of the curriculum in PE.
but just do like other said, go to the local community center or aquatic center. sign up for lessons.
it's a pretty basic, normal human skill that everyone needs to know. learning how to swim will guaranteed save your life one day.

Hmmm. I swam competitively my whole life and taught lessons for a few years but that was with kids competitive swimming and not teaching an adult survival-type swimming.

My recommendation would be to go to a community pool and spend plenty of time in the shallow end - ie. the 3 foot or 4 foot deep end. Practice treading water and floating on your back until you are comfortable with that, then you shouldn't have a problem in the deep end where you wouldn't be able to touch the bottom. I would recommend swimming laps at least a little bit to get a feel for it, since the muscle groups you use for swimming are totally different than anything else you've ever done. Grab a lane/spot on the side of the pool so that you have the option of grabbing the wall in the deep end if you need to for whatever reason. Learn dead man's float, it can save your ass. Spend plenty of time treading water too.

I am considering swimming but for some reason I lack the willpower to actually even go to the pool and join a swimming course. Water spoops me.

You see how you move more water when you make your hand into a big spoon? Ok so goal is to displace the most water in the same path, basically making a current or jet stream like how air would foil around a jet wing

ok so its all in a flow, so when you panic or overthink you disrupt this flow

for example, if youre bobbing up and down you will have trouble getting air if you time it wrong with the waves coming at you, so it can be better to hold your breathe longer and wait for better timing with the waves to breathe, now youve got more energy and youre in a smooth pattern so also using less energy

just relax and play around with it, youve got less ability to manipulate your movements so its all slower and requires smooth movements that work together

school didn't even have a pool so we had to go to the community pool, 20 cents entry every week.

You're pretty much out of luck. Swimming is one of those skills you need to pick up by a certain age due to decreasing neural plasticity.
Your best bet now is to work your way towards staying afloat in increasingly liquid media so you start with what most would still refer to as solids and work your way up to water (with media like custard and brine being intermediate steps).

Hold onto the side of the pool, practise kicking. Then use a kickboard, go up and down the pool. Then standing nipple deep, practise some armstrokes. Put it together, and swim a couple of meters in standing-height water. Then swim a bit further. Probably only take an hour to master the dog paddle.
