Anyone have experience with this thing? Seems kinda cool, might be good for off-gridding, or to have in the boogaloo kit if you got the 12v converter, but I'm skeptical about it being plastic construction. looks like it would break if I tossed it in a stone bed stream.

the only issue with this is commercial renewable tech is cheaper and better so long as you know how to find it(universities, auctions), while things like this are just consumer grade crap

The one you're looking at i dont know, but as far as concept, yeah, they're a great idea and my buddies spent a shitload of time researching it and it wasn't cheap.

Do you mean Torquedo? They make submersible motor drives (those things divers hold to pull them along) and electric outboards. Any electric motor will act as a dynamo; if you spin the blades it will produce electrical current.

Wind, hydro, etc. are a meme except at industrial scales.

Most solar equipment targeted at e.g. backpackers is a meme as well. If you want any sort of quality or reasonable power output, you have to spend a lot of $$$ and be prepared to lug around a lot of weight. Those little "10 watt" panels for charging phones or whatever are completely useless. You'd be lucky to get 5% of claimed power in realistic conditions.

Ok, so the thing with this one is that it seems lightweight and small enough that you can toss it in a backpack and take it with you wherever and take-down/set-up quickly.
Also what if it's cloudy? Streams seem more consistent and if you aren't near one this thing doubles as a wind turbine, so it seems more versatile. Probably if I needed to power a home quantity of electronics in a settled location I think you're right. But if you're just charging some lights a phone and a few other bare minimum items and concerned about mobility this seems pretty adequate.

Size? Looks like a good backpacking size.

My region of the country had like, 20 days of completely clear weather this summer, everything else was at least partially overcast.
If I was relying on solar for anything serious it would have been a pretty big problem.

If you must use an in-water moored turbine for power generation, I urge you to use one of the floating models. "Floating water wheel" or "floating water turbine," should net you some results. Specifically ones that look like a paddle wheel floating on the water. Some are pretty robust with good metal protection of everything. Others are just one good rain storm away from breaking on flotsam.

I don't recall if this model succeeded commercially, but its design is solid enough.

If this will be a permanent location, building a sluice and directing water to a hydro power plant will be the best solution. These can also be done with low head. Search, "vortex water turbine" or "gravitational vortex turbine" or "whirlpool turbine". They should look like a letter "P" and are normally made of cement with the turbine paddle in the center of the whirlpool. They can be used with streams that have extremely low head.

You can make a better one. it's pretty easy. we made a smaller model for backpackers also using these motor.
