The Colorado plateau is a great choice especially with the 4 seasons, and it's good to have that many options. Are you looking for a place with good hunting, good farming land or a mix of both? Best of luck to you in getting there.

Allow room for growth and embrace life as you go.Yeah, I realize that having such a specific place in mind means I have to be either very careful or very flexible. In my field its hard to get entry level positions so having a job in my career is not guaranteed in the region so I have two main options.
1. Get into the north coast with any job and hope I can break into the field at some point. Could result in me changing fields though and the early jobs I could get are not great for pay.
2. Get a job in my field absolutely anywhere and build up my resume. Maybe a position opens up where I want, maybe it wont. And like you said, I could meet a girl who wants something entirely different. Opens up the possibility of simply accepting where I land.
So now I'm applying for jobs everywhere hoping I can work with whatever I get. Trying to balance determination and flexibility. I'll also have to put Heinlein on the reading list.
